Fairfax County Police officers responding to a call Tuesday afternoon shot a man in Kingstowne after an altercation.

A 911 call came in at about 4 p.m. Tuesday about a possible suicide threat, according to Officer Don Gotthardt, public information officer for Fairfax County Police, who was on the scene Tuesday night at the 6600 block of Thurlton Drive in Kingstowne.

Thurlton Drive is located just off Lake Village Drive in Kingstowne.

Police said Tuesday night they were unsure how many shots were fired or if the man had a weapon. No weapons were retrieved from the scene, police said.

The altercation took place outdoors and police were unsure if the man was a resident of the area. Police did not know who placed the 911 call about the possibly suicidal man.

Residents on the scene said they did not hear any gun shots and did not realize there was anything happening until they saw a police presence when they came outside to walk their dogs or go for an evening jog, they told Patch.

No officers were injured during the incident and no residents were injured.

An attempt to help the possibly suicidal man Tuesday afternoon became grave after the shooting, which sent the 37-year old man to a local hospital. Police said their latest reports, as of about 7 p.m., were that the man is alive.

Police have not released the names of any officers involved in the shooting.

Officers from Internal Affairs and homicide detectives are on the scene.
