Teens Fight Over Twitter Comments, Part of Rise in Social Media Violence

Online arguments can escalate at school.

Two teenage girls got in a fight over comments made on social networking site Twitter, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Around 8:50 a.m. on Feb. 9 in the 6500 block of Franconia Road, two 16-year-old girls started arguing over the tweets. One girl suffered minor injuries during the scuffle, while another has been charged with assault.

While Robert E. Lee High School is on the 6500 block of Franconia, Franconia District Station spokesperson Officer Brooke Wright declined to say whether the incident occurred at the school. In an email, Wright wrote that conflicts on social media are more frequently spilling over into the offline world — and that may include Fairfax County's schools.

"Arguments/fights in the schools are more common these days from what is happening online in the off-school hours," Wright wrote.
