Springfield FBI Headquarters: GSA Expected to Start Soliciting Proposals This Summer

Moving the FBI headquarters from downtown D.C. to Fairfax County is a possibility, as the County has offered its optimal site, the Springfield warehouse, for consideration by the General Services Administration.

Based on earlier reports and comments by those involved, indications pointed to a summer Request for Proposal (RFP) date for the General Services Administration (GSA) for the new FBI headquarters. However, that decision is entirely up to the GSA, according to the Office of Supervisor Jeff McKay.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has offered the Springfield warehouse for consideration for the new FBI headquarters location. Governor Bob McDonnell also recently endorsed Springfield for the new headquarters.

In late 2011, the Government Accountability Office determined that the current FBI headquarters was in need of so many repairs that the government's best option was to move the bureau into a new building, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Holland said in a recent email that the Senate previously mentioned some of the guidelines that are being used to decide on the new location. Some of those guidelines include:

  • No more than 2 miles from a metro station
  • No more than 2.5 miles from the Beltway
  • Between 40-55 acres

However, the guidelines may change based on what the House and GSA say as time progresses.

On Tuesday Dan Cruz, GSA's deputy press secretary, emailed Patch the following statement on the current status of GSA's review:

“We are still reviewing the responses from our Request for Information (RFI). Based upon that information, we may issue a Request for Proposals, and the RFI was the first step toward a possible Request for Proposals.  The timing depends on a number of factors, including the responses GSA received, additional information or study that may be required, and the input of the various stakeholders involved.”

Locations in D.C., Maryland and Virginia are still being considered for the new FBI headquarters location.
