Lee District RECenter Employees to be Recognized for Saving Drowning Children

During Tuesday's meeting, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved Supervisor Jeff McKay's board matter to recognize Kailey Turner and Ariana Hanaity — two Lee District RECenter employees who recently saved two small children from drowning.

On July 1, Turner saw a child at the bottom of the ramp in the pool who was clearly in distress and jumped in immediately to save the child. After saving the child, Turner found the parents and explained how quickly a problem can happen and why it's important to keep an eye on children. Turner also informed her supervisor of the situation, according to McKay's board matter.

After a child followed an adult from the shallow end down the slope in the pool where the depth changes, Hanaity recognized the danger, activated the pool's emergency plan and rescued the child. Hanaity then informed the parents and her supervisor of the situation.

McKay described Turner and Hanaity's actions as "quick and professional responses that saved two children from what could have been tragic consequences." The board will recognize their efforts in the Sept. 24 meeting.
