Rep. Jim Moran's fundraising for his 2012 re-election bid continued to grow during the second quarter of this year, newly filed Federal Election Commission reports show.

Democrat Moran, who represents Virginia's 8th District in Congress, raised $62,960.14 from April 1 to June 30, according to FEC records. The money comes mainly from donations made by individuals and political action committees, as well as from refunds, rebates and "other receipts."

In all, Moran, currently in his 11th term, has raised $345,095.69 in the first two quarters of 2011 and has cash on hand of $522,764.70, some of which is carryover from last year. During the run-up to his last campaign, at the same time in 2009, Moran was at $182,717.45.

Moran currently has no announced opposition for the election in November 2012. Republican J. Patrick Murray of Alexandria squeaked through a GOP primary in the last race and went up against Moran in the election held in November, which Moran won with 61 percent of the vote.

Most of the money Moran raised so far was in the first quarter. Political observers note that most incumbents like to amass war chests early on in order to discourage potential competitors.
