"As expected, liberal special interests have begun lining up to support and fund Chairman Kaine's campaign, including half-a-million dollars from the liberal Web site ActBlue," said Bill Riggs, campaign press secretary for George Allen.

"The reason is clear: They know that Chairman Kaine would be a reliable vote for President Obama and the Washington Democrats' pro-spending, pro-union and pro big-government policies that he championed as chairman of the Democratic National Committee."

Kaine, a former governor of Virginia, began his campaign for a U.S. Senate seat being vacated by fellow Democrat, Sen. Jim Webb, on April 5.

Former Senator George Allen, who is running for the same job, raised $1.5 million in the first quarter, before Kaine got in the race. Allen has not released figures for money he has raised in the second quarter.

"Tim Kaine has laid out an optimistic vision of bringing Virginia answers to help Washington address serious national problems," said Brandi Hoffine, Kaine campaign press secretary, in a news release.

"We are pleased with how many people are responding to this campaign in its first weeks," she said. "Our primary focus for the coming months will be building on our strong network of grassroots supporters who have already committed to helping elect Governor Kaine to the U.S. Senate and making sure every Virginia voter has the opportunity to hear his plans for creating jobs, growing our economy and restoring fiscal discipline in Washington."
