Edison, Hayfield SAT Scores Under FCPS Average

Some scores under national average

SAT scores from Hayfield Secondary and Edison High in 2010 were under Virginian and, in some cases, national averages.

Hayfield students scored an average of 497 in Reading, 433 in Math, and 485 in Writing on the 2010 SAT. Edison High students scored better, with 508 in Reading, 507 in Math, and 497 in Writing. A perfect score is 800.

Hayfield scored belowed the national averages on all three sections of the test, with the national averages being 501 in Reading, 516 in Math, and 492 in Writing. Edison only scored below the national average in Math, meeting or failing the Virginian average in Reading (512 in Virginia) and Writing (497 in Virginia)

The schools also continued to score far beneath other schools in Fairfax County Public Schools. At the county level, scores in math, reading and writing for 2010 were exactly what they were the year before: 552 in Reading, 569 in Math and 543 in writing.

Fairfax County Public Schools spokesperson Paul Regnier said that from a county perspective, "Our scores are very good. We'd always like to see higher scores, but we're still very pleased. I think we're still the highest around."

Regnier noted that individual school results can be affected by a number of factors.

Furthermore, the SATs do not measure any endorsed curriculum either on a county, state or national level.

"We are very happy with our scores," Regnier said. "But we know that the scores are only a predictor of what students will do in their freshman year of college. There are plenty of students who don't necessarily do well on the SATs, but get good grades in school and go on to do well in college."
