Edison Lady Eagles Ready to Soar

Edison opens season December 1 at Woodson.

When talking National District basketball, all conversations start and end with . The Lady Eagles have won six National District trophies in the past seven years and have won at least 18 games each season spanning back to 2006.

The Eagles’ season tips off December 1, as the team hits the road to face . Three starters return from last season’s starting five, led by . Sherrill earned National District co-player of the year honors and helped lead the team to postseason play. Sherrill will be joined by her sister Sheila, a forward, and Averi Collins, also a forward.

“They’re going to be key for us inside and around the perimeter," said Edison head coach Dianne Lewis. "Sheila and Averi both can play guard and forward and can interchange, so I think that is a plus in our favor."

Edison will adapt to life without starting guards Kierra Graham and Krystyna Watts, who both graduated this spring. Lewis will turn to the team’s young crop of players to step up and fill the void.

“We don’t have the experience that we’ve had in our guard area before," Lewis said. "But they certainly bring a lot of heart and passion and I’m looking forward to coaching them and have them on board with what we’re trying to do.”

Edison’s youth will be tested early this season with games against Woodson, T.C. Williams and Yorktown making up the early-December portion of the team’s schedule. But if history is any indicator, the Eagles will make a run at adding a seventh National District trophy to the already crowded case.

The experience of the Sherrill sisters and Collins should lend well to the team’s younger players.

“I’m excited," Lewis said. "We have a tough preseason schedule so my girls will definitely be battle tested by the time we go into district play."
