Edison's Ruth Sherrill Verbally Commits to Hofstra

2010-11 National District co-player of the year headed to Long Island next fall

It didn’t take long for Edison’s Ruth Sherrill to decide where she would play college basketball next year. The three-year varsity starter was sold on Hofstra University after visiting the Long Island school’s campus in August.

In addition to Hofstra, Sherrill held offers from William & Mary and East Carolina. The 6-foot-1 power forward gave Hofstra her verbal commitment on Monday, Oct. 3, and cited the school’s stellar academic reputation as being one of her deciding factors.

“I was definitely looking for a strong business school because I plan on majoring in business marketing,” said Sherrill.

“I really liked the campus and the coaching staff was really great. I was very comfortable," she said. "I was looking for diversity and a small student to teacher ratio and Hofstra had all of those things.”

Sherrill’s mother, Angela, accompanied her daughter on the visit. According to Ruth, her mother was pleased with what the school had to offer.

“She liked the campus as well and was very comfortable with my decision and supported me with it. She was happy that I committed,” Ruth said.

Sherrill was the 2010-11 National District co-player of the year and has helped guide Edison to consecutive 20-win seasons. She was also a member of the Eagles’ 2008 and 2010 Northern Region District champion teams.

Edison head coach Dianne Lewis has built a reputation for producing top college prospects and was not surprised by Sherrill’s early commitment.

“Hofstra is going to be an excellent fit for her," Lewis said. "Ruth went about looking at schools definitely with academics in mind. She did her homework with this.

“She has a great personality and is fun to be around. She also has a great work ethic, which I noticed her freshman year when she would come to our workouts. I noticed it very early and that will transition to whatever she does in life. It is going to take her far.”

Hofstra University is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association and went 19-12 last season under head coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey.

Per NCAA rules, Hofstra University is prohibited from providing a statement until Sherrill signs her official letter of intent, which is expected in November.
