"The Perils of the College Drinking Culture" Forums Kick Off in May
College-bound Fairfax County students and their parents are encouraged to attend an upcoming program that deals with the binge drinking on college campuses. “The Perils of the College Drinking Culture” will be presented by the Unified Prevention Coalition (UPC) of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and its Countywide Initiative to Reduce Underage Drinking (CIRUD), in collaboration with the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) and the Safe Community Coalition.

The program will be offered twice in May and again in the summer at locations across the county. The first program will be held on Tuesday, May 17, at Langley High School, and the second will be held on Tuesday, May 24, at Providence Presbyterian Church, 9019 Little River Turnpike in Fairfax. Other programs are set for Wednesday, July 20, at West Springfield High School and Wednesday, July 27, at Westfield High School. The two-hour program begins at 7 p.m. in each location.

The event will feature a screening and panel discussion on the award-winning documentary, Haze, designed for parents and their college-bound teens, as well as any citizens concerned about underage drinking.

Parents are encouraged to attend with their adolescent children. Featured speakers and panelists will includeRaymond Morrogh, Commonwealth’s Attorney for Fairfax County; William Hauda, M.D., emergency physician, Inova Fairfax Hospital; Fairfax County Police Chief David Rohrer and Captain Bruce Ferguson, Commander, Youth Services Division; Jeff Levy, father of a student who died following drinking at a college party; and a college student.
