TB Outbreak: Health Department Arranges Special Clinic for Tuberculosis Testing

Those who received letters from the health department can be tested at Robert E. Lee High School June 24-28.

After FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department recently launched a tuberculosis (TB) investigation at Robert E. Lee High School, the health department is addressing the community's concerns — especially those directly connected to the school.

The health department has asked approximately 430 people who have been identified as potentially exposed to individuals with active TB disease in the school to get tested at special clinics being held in the high school June 24-28.

According to the news release, only those who recently received a letter from the health department should attend the special clinics to be tested for TB disease. To make an appointment or to ask questions about the investigation or TB, families are encouraged to call (703) 267-3511.

Those who did not receive a letter from the health department are not considered at risk to being exposed to the disease and do not have to visit the special clinic. Families who are concerned and wish to be tested anyway, are encouraged to make an appointment with their local healthcare provider or the Health Department’s five District Offices.

According to the health department, those who attended graduation or other events that involved Robert E. Lee High School do not meet the exposure criteria and don't have to be tested for TB disease. There is currently no ongoing risk of exposure at the school.

The health department is continuing its investigation with the three initial individuals. During the course of the investigation, the health department has been determined that one of the individuals was not exposed at Robert E. Lee High School but elsewhere and the timing of the diagnosis was a coincidence.
