Hayfield Secondary Students Raise Money for Japan

Students hope to raise $1,000 by the end of the school year

Inspired by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Hayfield Secondary School's National Junior Honor Society is raising money for the stricken country.

Hayfield's NJHS students were originally planning to make care packages for American soldiers overseas, according to NJHS member and Hayfield eighth-grade student Jonathan Baik. When NJHS members heard that another student had family in Japan, however, the group decided to raise money for Japanese relief instead.

The NJHS then set up a website to accept donations, according to Jessica Covan, an eighth-grade student at Hayfield's and the NJHS's treasurer.

As of Friday morning, the effort had earned almost $305. Covan said the NJHS hopes to raise $1,000 by the end of the school year.
