Hayfield Sports Roundup: Hayfield Goes 9-4

Hawks field hockey, football and volleyball capsules

Varsity Field Hockey (9-4-1):

There isn’t a hotter National District field hockey program than Hayfield’s. The Hawks currently own a six-game win streak and haven’t lost a match since Sept. 2. The team enjoyed a 2-1 road win over Thomas Jefferson (5-6) on Friday, Sept. 30 and a 1-0 overtime home win against Yorktown (10-4) on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Senior forward Hannah Wilson scored the game-winning goal on an assist from junior forward Elizabeth Sanie.

With only three games left in the regular season, Hayfield boasts a 4-0 National District record. The team travels to Falls Church (1-7) on Thursday, Oct. 6 and hosts Washington-Lee (4-6) on Monday, Oct. 10.

J.V. Field Hockey (0-10-1):

As the season nears its end, the Hawks will attempt to grab their first win. Despite the team’s struggles, wins against Falls Church on Oct. 6 and Washington-Lee on Oct. 11 will end the season a positive note.

Varsity Football (3-2):

After a 3-0 start, the Hawks are on a two-game losing streak. The most recent, a 49-3 loss to Centreville (5-0) on Friday, Sept. 30. The Hawks have been outscored 70-3 during the two-game skid and the team’s offense has struggled to move the ball consistently.

However, players and fans should expect the win drought to end this Thursday, Oct. 6, as the team travels to Wakefield (0-5). Wakefield has scored just 51 points this season while their defense has allowed 241. Barring a miracle, the Hawks should win Thursday’s game and move to 3-3 on the season.

J.V. Football (2-1):

Hawk J.V. football lost 50-20 to Centreville on Tuesday, September 27. The loss was the team’s first of the year. Hayfield’s J.V. squad hosts Wakefield on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Freshman Football (2-1):

Like their varsity and J.V. counterparts, the Hayfield freshman team lost to Centreville 40-14 on Sept. 27. The loss was their first of the season. Freshman football hosts Wakefield on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Varsity Volleyball (1-7):

Tough times have fallen upon the varsity Hawk volleyball program. The team’s only win this season is a 3-1 victory over Marshall (2-9), which occurred in early September. Last week, the Hawks lost home matches to West Springfield (9-3) and Washington-Lee (6-9).

With the season nearly halfway complete, the Hawks will attempt to be more competitive for the second half of their schedule.  They’ll have their chance on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Edison (8-10) and Tuesday, Oct. 11 against Stuart (14-1).

J.V. Volleyball (2-7):

J.V. Volleyball dropped matches against West Springfield on Sept. 26 and Washington-Lee on Oct. 3. The team travels to Edison on Wednesday, Oct. 5 and Stuart, Oct. 11.

Freshman Volleyball (6-4):

The Hayfield volleyball team is on a three-game win streak. The team defeated West Springfield 2-1 on Sept. 26 and Washington-Lee 2-0 on Oct. 3.
