Supervisors Restrict Free Parking Around Hayfield Secondary

Students park on road to avoid fee, McKay says

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to restrict parking on portion of Old Telegraph Road behind Hayfield Secondary. Part of the road that had become a popular parking spot for students.

"Parking near the back entrances to Hayfield Secondary does not provide for much safety," Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay (D), who proposed the motion, said to the Board Tuesday.

Students park on the stretch of Old Telegraph to avoid buying $75 parking passes to park in the school's parking lots, according to McKay. Until Tuesday's vote,  are there were no restrictions on parking on the side of the road.

There were 47 cars parked along the portion of Old Telegraph around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Hayfield's parking lot looked like it had enough open spaces to accomodate the cars.

"Obviously, students think to themselves, 'Why would I pay to park on school grounds when I could park for free just seconds away?'" McKay told the other supervisors.

McKay was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.
