Bolognesi Records First Win as Hayfield Girls Soccer Coach

Hawks win 4-0 thanks to strong defense

In his third game as Hayfield girls soccer Coach, Ruben Bolognesi recorded his first win, as the Hawks defeated T.C. Williams 4-0 to improve to 1-2.

The Hawks won due to their dominating possession of the ball and their excellent defense in preventing the Titans (0-1-1) from many chances near the goal.

“It feels great,” Bolognesi said of his and the team’s first win. “Very relieved. We were overdue. We have been play very good soccer and it wasn’t coming around, but we made a breakthrough today.”

Senior Tarah Coley scored the first goal, finishing from the right corner, with only 10 minutes off the clock. She then delivered again, scoring only a minute-and-a-half later.

“It was very important,” Bolognesi said of the quick scoring.

Sophomore Natalie Fry delivered her first goal just three minutes later to put the Hawks up 3-0. With 13 minutes remaining in the half, she struck again to put the Hawks up 4-0.

“In the first half, we played good, but it wasn’t a 4-0 half,” Bolognesi said. “We told the girls at the half that we had to keep the intensity for the second half and just keep on fighting, that [T.C. Williams] was going to come out strong and they did.

“Fortunately we were able to keep the zero in our goal.”

The Titans did come out and play a stronger second half preventing many opportunities for the Hawks and controlling the ball better. But the Hawks’ defense was too tough for the Titans to crack.

“We were just playing a possession game,” Bolognesi said of the shift in philosophy in the second half. “We did play all of our second stringers. I’m very happy of the win. I think we cashed in on every defensive mistake that they made and that’s always a key.

“This win lifts our morale. We needed a win bad. Like I said, we’ve been playing good soccer and it just wasn’t coming around. This is good.”

Hayfield will travel to McLean to play the Highlanders on Monday, March 28 at 7 p.m.
