T.C. Williams Edges Edison

Eagles' upset bid against Titans falls short in a 55-53 loss.

The Edison Eagles basketball squad suffered a heartbreaking 55-53 loss at on Friday night before a raucous crowd that spilled out onto the court in a wild celebration after the Titans capped a come-from-behind win by nailing four free throws in the last minute of the game.

The Eagles led for most of the contest, but T.C. Williams nipped ahead by just a point, 49-48, with just more than two minutes to play. The Eagles fought back to retake the lead but their two top scorers, Matt Murphy, who finished with 16 points, and Tyrone Mackall, who finished with 24, both fouled out and were sorely missed in the waning moments of the game.

T.C. Williams senior point guard Daquan Kerman iced the game by making two free throws to break a 53-53 tie with just 4.4 seconds to play. Senior forward Anthony Huggins led the Titans with 19 points.

Edison students came decked out in black T-shirts that read “Hype Squad,” and were loudly supportive of their team all night, practically negating the Titans' homecourt advantage.

The loss drops the Eagles to 0-2, but the fact that they nearly upset the Titans, who are No. 25 in The Washington Post’s All-Met rankings, bodes well for the rest of their season.
