Hawk Runners Qualify for States In Saturday's Northern District Championship

Cody Whitlow places first in long jump, leads Hawks

Hayfield High School’s indoor track and field teams turned in solid performances in Saturday’s Northern Region Track and Field Championships. The Hayfield boys finished eigth overall, while the girls came in 14th on Saturday at George Mason University. Six Hawks qualified for states.

Cody Whitlow, with a day to remember, qualified for states in two events. He placed first in the men’s long jump, while also placing fourth in the men’s 55-Meter dash. Jonathan Figaro placed fourth in the men’s long jump, Hashim Sesay placed fifth in the 55 meters, and Nahu Dimitri placed sixth in the men’s 500-meter.

“We had a couple of setbacks, no different than anyone else. But even with some of our kids who did not advance, some ran their personal bests. I told them that they had nothing to do but be proud of themselves,” Hayfield coach Charles Swindell said.

“When you do your best, you have to accept that, regardless of what your place may be. We realize that we have more work to do. The kids who didn’t [make states] know what it takes now. So when we start outdoor practices, they need to come with the vigor and the willingness to understand.”

Renee Reives placed first overall in the women’s shot put and Lola Ojabowale tied for fourth in the women’s high jump.
