Hayfield Sports Roundup: Field Hockey Advances to Regional Tournament

Football in sole possession of second place in National District standings

Hayfield Field Hockey (12-6-1):

After an 11-win regular season, the Hawks advanced to the National District tournament this week. Playing as the #3 seed, Hayfield defeated Edison 5-2 in the first round of the tournament held Monday, Oct. 17. The win gives Hayfield a berth in the regional tournament.

Katie Zatt, a senior, scored two goals in the contest. Seniors Brooke Watson and Hannah Wilson and junior Elizabeth Sanie contributed with one. Senior Megan Von Kolnitz distributed three assists.

The team’s first-round Edison win paved the way for a rematch against Washington-Lee in the district semifinals. Washington-Lee halted Hayfield’s win streak at eight, in a 2-0 victory just six days earlier.

The semifinals yielded similar results as Washington-Lee eliminated Hayfield from district tournament play in a 3-0 victory. Despite the loss, the Hawks secured an automatic berth in regional tournament play which begins Tuesday, Oct. 25

Hayfield Football (5-2):

Don’t look now, but the Hawks are 3-1 in National District play and are in sole possession of second place in district standings. Hayfield grabbed a much-needed home victory from Mount Vernon last Friday, defeating the Majors 27-6 on Homecoming.

Two of the three reaming teams on the Hawks’ schedule have won a paltry four combined games this season and give Hayfield a realistic chance of finishing the regular season with at least seven wins. The Hawks host Washington-Lee this Friday in National District action.

Hayfield Volleyball (3-10):

After dropping their previous seven matches, Hayfield volleyball exploded for two wins, going 2-1 on the week. The Hawks defeated West Potomac in three matches on Friday, Oct. 13. Four days later the squad dispatched Mount Vernon 3-2.

The two-game win streaked ended against Yorktown on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Two games remain on the regular season schedule as the Hawks travel to Falls Church on Monday, Oct. 24 and close out the season at home against Wakefield on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Freshmen Volleyball (9-5):

The freshmen volleyball team won its ninth game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 19, defeating Yorktown 2-0. The Hawks will to add a tenth win to a successful season against either Falls Church on Monday, Oct. 24 or Wakefield on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
