Majors Claim Big Victory Over Hawks in Girls Basketball

Mount Vernon's girls basketball team overcame a tough first quarter for a 58-34 win over Hayfield.

The Majors made an impressive offensive showing during the second half of the game, keeping the Hawks to 13 points in the final two quarters.

Majors forward Samantha Porter nailed some critical free throws, while Lafatima Gray made herself the star player of the evening, racking up a tremendous portion of the team's points.

Despite a rough third and fourth quarter, Hayfield's Shannen Cochraham, Taylor Jewett and Brandi Smith worked hard for rebounds and clear shots while teammate Dorthy Cliatt tried to carry the team's defense.

The first quarter showed little movement from either team, especially with some clumsy passes from the Hawks and some slow-moving defense from the Majors.

"You look scared right now," shouted Majors Coach Courtney Coffer in an attempt to wake up Mount Vernon's offense.

His wake-up call proved effective, as his team tied it up at the end of the half before their offense exploded in the second half. Though Hayfield struggled to pull themselves together with help from Leah Brennan and Jewett, Mount Vernon's Gray and Tiffany Webster closed out the final minutes.

The Hawks coaches, who remained silent for most of the game, quickly retreated into the locker room once the buzzer sounded their official loss at 58-34.

Hayfield's girls will next play at J.E.B. Stuart High while Mount Vernon will play Falls Church High at home, both on Jan. 18.
