Sports Round-Up: Edison Girls Win Four Straight
Edison chases Mount Vernon in National District.
Here’s a roundup of last week’s sports highlights from Alexandria and southern Fairfax County:
Edison
After losing 73-47 to Mount Vernon earlier this month, the Lady Eagles won four straight and find themselves on Mount Vernon’s heels in National District standings. Coach Dianne Lewis’ Eagles defeated Wakefield 65-30 on Jan. 17 and Yorktown 48-38 on Friday. Ruth Sherrill leads Edison in scoring this season with an 18.7 point per game average.

Hayfield
The Hawks boys basketball team defeated Yorktown and Stuart by a combined seven points en route to a two win week. The wins give the Hawks a 5-3 district record and put them tied for third in district standings.

Annandale
Annandale wrestlers carried a 23-5 season record into Saturday’s meet at T.C. Williams, but inclement weather forced FCPS officials to postpone the event. As of Jan. 18, Dane Harlow (126 lbs.) owns a 33-1 record and is expected to wrestle deep in the district and regional tournaments next month.
Mount Vernon
The Mount Vernon boys basketball team went 2-0 last week, defeating Falls Church 84-38 and Washington-Lee 74-62. The wins push Mount Vernon’s win streak to four and give the team two more district victories.
West Springfield
The Lady Spartans defeated Lake Braddock 53-36 on Friday behind Logan Battle’s 20-point performance. The win keeps West Springfield undefeated in district play with eight wins and gives them a two-game lead over T.C. Williams in the race for the regular season Patriot District title.
Robinson
Robinson’s rifle team defeated Lake Braddock 1167-1060 on Jan. 18. The team’s 1167 points set a school record. The Rams are 9-0 this season and have one final match before shooters head to the Potomac High School League Small Bore Tournament on Jan. 28.
T.C. Williams
T.C. Williams girls basketball notched its eleventh win of the season Friday, defeating West Potomac 53-29. The Titans are 5-2 this month and 7-1 in Patriot District play. Their lone loss was a 49-48 nail-biting contest against district leader West Springfield.
West Potomac
A 17-point fourth quarter propelled the Wolverine boys basketball team to a 55-50 win over district foe Lake Braddock on Jan. 17. Christian McKenerick led West Potomac in scoring with 15 points and Brendan McHale and Dylan O’Connor contributed with 10 apiece.
South County
Angela Banks hit a last-second shot Friday evening to give South County its fifth win on the season. The Stallions withstood Megan Cox’s 19-point effort to defeat Lee 52-51. Banks and April Henson combined to score 28 points.
