The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is hosting a "Back-to-School Adoption Event" at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter from now until Sept. 11. During this period, the organization is offering adoption discounts on its adoptable pets.
Aug. 15-21: Rush Week
You have the opportunity to become an AWLA adopter and meet "brothers" and "sisters" from Delta Omicron Gamma (DOG) and Kappa Alpha Tau (KAT). AWLA is also holding a Canine Cruise on Thursday, Aug. 16 featuring AWLA alumni.
During Rush Week, adoption fees are reduced by 50 percent for members of DOG and KAT. Fees for small animals will be offered at a 25 percent underclassmen discount.
Aug. 22-28: Fill Your Empty Nest
Are the kids suddenly all grown up? If they've left for college or just never seem to be home, liven up the house with a new dog, cat or other adoptable pet.
During this week, parents with kids enrolled in school can get a 50 percent discount on all adult animals. All small animals, excluding birds, will be available for no adoption fee.
Aug. 29-Sept. 4: Meet the Class of 2012
The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter offers a wide variety of pets with different personalities, and they need help graduating this fall.
If you sign the 2012 AWLA Yearbook, you can get a 50 percent discount on all adult animals during this week and a 25 percent underclassmen discount on small animals.
Sept. 5-11: "Bark" to School Week
Summer will be over and families will be getting back into their old routines. Keep things interesting with dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs and other companion animals who are in need of a home.
Thursday, Sept. 6 is "Bark" to School Night at AWLA and your chance to meet adoptable pets and the staff that cares for them during the day.
During this week, all adoption fees will be waived for adopters who bring in shelter supplies. Small animals are also eligible for a 25 percent underclassmen discount.
The shelter supply wish list can be found here.
