Mutts Matter: Twinkie the Pug

Meet Twinkie, an affectionate and sometimes sassy lady pug with a resilient spirit.

by Mutts Matter Rescue

Hi, folks! My name is Twinkie, and just like the delicious treat that I’m named after, I’m super sweet, squishy, and everyone loves me! I’m a proud, nine year old lady pug and I weigh 20 pounds. I've had a rough life, but that hasn't impacted my spirit or ability to love and show affection one bit. I’m a social dog who loves people and I really want to be the center of your attention. I missed out on so many years of loving a person that I need to make up for lost time.

My story is sadly far too common. I was abandoned with my two friends, Cupcake and Suzie Q, by a backyard breeder who over-bred us and kept us in a cage for most of our lives. I tried my best to show him what a great companion I could be, but he didn’t seem to care. We were just a business to him and cast aside when he had no use for us anymore. Cupcake and Suzie Q have both found loving families, and I hope my turn is coming soon.

Thankfully Mutts Matter took me in, and has shown me the first kindness I've known in my life. I wasn't in great shape when I came into the rescue. I was heartworm positive and had vision issues that had not been addressed for years. Not much is known about my medical history, but one of my eyes had been surgically removed, and the vision in my remaining eye is limited, most likely from neglect and overexposure to the elements. The good news is I’m now on the mend. I've completed all my heartworm treatments, and take eye drops every day, which help a lot.

I’m a resilient dog, and my limited vision doesn't get me down, so don’t feel sad for me. Sure, I bump into things sometimes, but I adapt quickly and learn my terrain. The first few days in my foster home, I paced the rooms to figure out the layout and learned where all the important things were, like food, water, and the couch. I’m still not great with steps, but my foster parents keep a doggie gate at the top on the stairs so that I don't accidentally fall down. They really don’t need to worry though because I’m basically always by their side. My foster mom affectionately calls me the Velcro Dog.

Some would say that I’m the perfect companion pup... I’m loving, laid back, and enjoy the simple things in life. I love to nap, snuggle, get belly rubs, eat, and eat some more. I love having other dogs around and am currently living with three other dogs, two of which are pugs like me. I love to go on walks in the evening when it’s cool, so I can take in all the smells and appreciate my freedom to explore the world around me. I may be sight impaired, but my sense of smell and hearing are top notch.

Although I do excel at napping, I also have a sassy and playful side to me too. Every once in a while I like to chew on my rope toy and jump up to give my foster dad hugs and kisses. I've really bonded with him, and when he walks in the room, my tail starts wagging and I light up. I'm his little helper too. If he ever forgets to set his alarm in the morning, I make sure to remind him to get up and feed me. I’m here for him.

I would fit best in a calm home with another small dog companion, and an owner who is home during the day with time to give me the love and attention I deserve. I’m not a hard dog, but I do need someone who will watch out for me and make sure there are no dangers or obstacles in my path, and continue my daily eye drops to keep me in tip-top shape. A fenced yard would be great too, and I’m fine with older kids – just means more humans for me to love on.
