Artwalk, Affordable Care Workshop, Sing Your Heart, Plus Special Olympics Basketball

This weekend is the 2nd Saturday Artwalk at the Workhouse Arts Center.  The event showcases the work of over 100 visual artists.  Orgnanizers are also collecting non-perishable foods for the Lorton Community Action Center. Free. 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the center on 9601 Ox Road in Lorton.

Show Support for Special Olympics Athletes. Special Olympics basketball athletes will take to the courts for basketball contests, a shoot-out and an all-star game, during which organizers will be tossing out prizes, running zany relays and pumping up the crowd in support of Special Olympics. All they need is some enthusiastic and supportive "cheerleaders" in the audience to encourage the athletes. Sign up today at www.volunteer2cheer.com. Sing Your Heart Out. Did you sing a cappella in college, or have you always wanted to try? Do you like to sing at karaoke or in the shower? Ever make drum noises when you think no one is looking? “Supreme Chord” is holding a round of auditions for lower voice parts (tenors and basses) as well as for vocal percussionists. Supreme Chord is one of the most dynamic co-ed a cappella groups in the area, made up of young professionals who live and work all over the DMV and love a cappella music. Affordable Care Act Workshop. Do you need more information and background on the ACA, otherwise known as Obamacare? Come to a free workshop this Saturday, Jan. 18, 9 a.m. to noon at Heritage Fellowship Church, 2501 Fox Mill Road, Reston.

Show Off Your Talents. Performers of all types are invited to show off their talents at ArtSpace Herndon's open mic night. Singers, dancers, actors, musicians, and poets of all ages are encouraged to perform. Sign up for two numbers, or 10 minutes of stage time. Free Family Movie Night. Bring the family to see the animated 2012 film 'The Lorax,' based on the popular Dr. Seuss book. It's all part of Herndon Environmental Network's environmental movie series. Fun activities and discussions for all ages will follow the movie, including a brief talk by HEN's Habitat Heroes, about invasive and native plants. Have A CALM Home? How Do You Do That? Come to a free, “laugh-out-loud” workshop for parents on how to have a calmer home. The founder of host group “Celebrate Calm” will demonstrate how to say no and stop the entitlement mentality, stop the eye-rolling and backtalk, motivate kids who are negative or overwhelmed, get kids off the screens and social media without a fight, and eliminate the constant power struggles and arguing. Stuff the Bus. The ‘Stuff the Bus’ food drive begins in Fairfax County on Saturday and lasts into February. Find out more about how to donate.

Sing for Facets. Six Degree Singer’s, a young professional voice choir, will perform a benefit concert at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax. Proceeds will go toward FACETS, a Fairfax County organization that works to provide services for the poor in Fairfax County. Tickets are $15 at the door. The Washington, Virginia & Maryland Garden Railway Society will have a garden gauge (g) scale model train display at the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the museum on 11200 Fairfax Station Road in Fairfax Station. Teen Tournament. If you have a teen in your family who loves video games, The Tech Titans is hosting a tournament to compete in Street Fighter 4. Each competitor will go heads up against a peer. The event is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bull Run Regional Library at 8051 Ashton Ave. in Manassas. Participants must be between the ages of 6 and 12. Register online.

Book Discussion. Sci-fi fans may want to check out the Science Fiction Book Discussion group at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Central Community Library on 8601 Mathis Ave. in Manassas. The group will discuss Guards! Guards! by Terry Prachett.

Human Rights Day. The Prince William County Human Rights Commission is celebrating Universal Human Rights Day this weekend. The program commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act with Sen. Henry Marsh to deliver the keynote address.  The event is at 9 p.m. Saturday at the James J. McCoart Government Building, located at 1 County Complex Court in Woodbridge.

Networking. The Business Women of Prince William County group is hosting their monthly networking luncheon. The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Giorgio’s Family Restaurant, 4392 Kevin Walker Drive in Montclair. Find out more information.

Date night. The Workhouse Arts Center is launching a new Date Night program. The program is a series of cooking classes. The first event is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the center on 9601 Ox Road in Lorton.

SOUPer Saturday. The annual SOUPer Saturday event at theTorpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria will help raise money for the United Community Ministries food pantry. Artists will be selling handcrafted bowls made by Torpedo Factory potters with the proceeds going to UCM. The event is from 9 a.m. to noon at the center on 105 N. Union St. on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria.
