Del Ray Artisans Exhibit, Taste of Falls Church and a Wine and Chocolate Tasting

Here are a few local weekend events.

The weekend is almost near. If you're planning to stay in northern Virginia, check out some of these local events in the area.

Friday, Sept. 6

One Percent art exhibit opening reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Del Ray Artisans, 2704 Mount Vernon Ave. The art exhibit shows works inspired by asking artists to share the 1 percent in their world as inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s "The Great Gatsby" and its look at the wealthy 1 percent. The exhibit runs through September. thedelrayartisans.org

The Wolf Trap hosts a live musical accompaniment to “The Lord of the Rings” in screenings on Friday and Saturday. It’s a chance to see Frodo’s epic journey out of the Shire, with a new twist. The performance includes a high-definition presentation of the film, with a full orchestra, chorus and soloists. From $25. 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Filene Center, 1645 Trap Road, Vienna. 

Saturday, Sept. 7

Members of eight tribes will be on hand for the Virginia Indian Festival on Saturday at Riverbend Park. The event will include the Rappahannock dancers and drummers, as well as hands-on activities and demonstrations, including storytelling, throwing spears and making stone tools. There will also be a marketplace with crafts and jewelry. $5. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverbend Park, 8700 Potomac Hills Street, Great Falls.

The Burke Centre Festival returns for a 36th year at the Conservancy Festival Grounds all weekend. Admission is free for the popular community event. There will be rides, children activities, demonstrations, arts and crafts and more. Free. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., wine garden 5-10 p.m. Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the festival grounds, 6060 Burke Centre Parkway.

Revel in the arts at the 11th annual King Street Art Festival on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. andSunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event turns King Street from Washington Street to the waterfront into an outdoor art gallery with original art work from more than 200 artists. 

It’s the Taste of Falls Church at the Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Center, 223 Little Falls St. Sample cuisine from city restaurants for $3 per taste or 10 tastes for $25. Participating restaurants include Argia’s, Dogwood Tavern, Mad Fox Brewing Company, Pizzeria Orso, Sweet Rice and Zinga Frozen Yogurt, but there are many more. fallschurchva.gov/content/government/departments/recparks/events/2013/fallfest_tofc.aspx

Stroke! Registration for this year’s fall crew program will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the boathouse, which is located on the Potomac River at 1 Madison St. in Alexandria.  Fall crew begins Sept. 9 and will be held from 4:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The program runs for five weeks and concludes on Oct. 11. Crew is open to all students in the 7th-12th grades from public and private schools in Alexandria and the Washington, DC metro area.  

It’s a Falls Church recycling extravaganza from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is held twice a year in Falls Church. Residents can bring in costing, textiles, electronics, bike tires and tubes, printer cartridges, medical supplies and more. Bring the goods to the recycling center at 217 Gordon Rd.

Sunday, Sept. 8

Operation Homefront DC Metro will host Freedom Walk 2013 with a walk through Arlington Cemetery and wreath laying ceremonies at the Pentagon Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The walk is from 8 a.m. to noon at Arlington National Cemetery, 1 Memorial Dr.

Nelson Mandela’s sketches made in the early 2000s reflecting on his life in prison, along with a copy of Shakespeare’s complete works signed by the South African leader, is on display at Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 East Capitol St, SE in Washington, DC. The 4th Annual Cycle Fest starts at the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia on Sunday morning. The JCC-sponsored event includes distances of 30, 50 and 65 miles. The Cycle Fest benefits the Wounded Warriors Project and Hazon. $50, includes Cycle Fest T-shirt, rest stop treats and mechanical support. 7:30 a.m. 8900 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax.

Runners will take their mark on Sunday at the Reston Triathlon. Participants swim for a mile in Lake Audubon, bike more than 22 miles through Reston and run more than 6 miles to the finish line at South Lakes High School. 7 a.m. at Lake Audubon. Note: There will be no parking on Twin Branches Road.
