Edison Car Show and Carnival, Brides Against Breast Cancer and 2nd Saturday Art Walk

Here are a few weekend planner events for Sept. 13-15.

The weekend is near and there are always so many possibilities. Check out some of the local events going on in northern Virginia and spend your weekend wisely!

Friday, Sept. 13

Brides Against Breast Cancer is a national nonprofit touring the country selling donated wedding gowns with the proceeds directly going toward programs and services for people affected by cancer. The "Nationwide Tour of Gowns" will make a tour stop in Washington Sept. 13-14 at the Dupont Circle Hotel, 1500 New Hampshire Ave. http://www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/upcoming-shows-2013/washington-dc-bridal-show-september-2013/

Music, firing demonstrations and hikes are just some of the ways to commemorate the 151st anniversary of the Battle of Antietam at Antietam National Battlefield, 5831 Dunker Church Rd., Sharpsburg, Md. The event runs Friday through Sundayand costs $4 per person or $6 per family. Call 301-432-5125for more information.

Jammin Java is hosting two acts this weekend for your musical enjoyment. Friday night, its An Evening with Charlie Hunter & Scott Amendola Duo. Street Corner Symphony will take the stage for two shows Saturday night. Prices and times vary. 227 Maple Ave. E, Vienna.

McLean’s 1st Stage performs "The Pitmen Painters" in which a group of miners makes an unexpected mark on the art world. The show is performed at 8 p.m. Fridays, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.Saturdays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays. The theater is located at 1524 Spring Hill Rd., McLean. Tickets range from $15 to $27. Saturday, Sept. 14

The Class of 2015 at Edison High School in the Kingstowne area is having its 2nd Annual Car Show and Carnival from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the high school.

It’s a special trip back in time with the Colonial Market and Fair at Mount Vernon on Saturday and Sunday. “General Washington” will be overseeing Revolutionary War drills. The event includes artisans demonstrating their crafts and selling a variety of goods. Potomac River sightseeing cruises also will be available for free. Entertainment will include music, sword-swallowing, fire-eating and more. The event is included in Mount Vernon admission: $17 for adults; $8 for children ages 6-11; and free for ages 5 and under. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.

The Workhouse Arts Center hosts its 2nd Saturday Art Walk this weekend. See work from more than 100 artists, with music and light refreshments provided. Nonperishable food will be collected for the Lorton Community Action Center. Free. 6-9 p.m. Saturday at 9601 Ox Road, Lorton.

Saturdays through Oct. 26 take the All the President's Pupswalking tour of Mount Vernon. President George Washington loved dogs and you’ll hear all about it during a 1.25 mile walk with five stops. The tour begins at 10 a.m. and the cost is general admission - $17 for adults - plus $5 for the tour. Admission for dogs is free. mountvernon.org

The City of Alexandria is hosting the second annual Alexandria Multicultural Fest on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Four Mile Run Park and community building, 4109 Mt. Vernon Ave. Admission is free. delray.patch.com/group/around-town/p/alexandria-gearing-up-for-diversecity-multicultural-fest

Learn more about Samuel Tucker during a 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. book signing and reception for the first children’s biography about the Virginia civil rights trail blazer. Remarks will be made by Sen. Henry Marsh III, the late Tucker’s law partner. Family friendly and free! Reservations required by RSVP to 703-746-4356.

The Keegan Theatre wraps up its performance of “A Few Good Men” this weekend. The military courtroom drama shows at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Ticket price ranges from $30 to $35. The Keegan is located at 1742 Church St., NW, Washington, Call 703-892-0202 for more information.

The National Football League may have just charged back into our lives, but check out the other football – MLS soccer team D.C. United plays the Los Angeles Galaxy at RFK Stadium, 2400 East Capitol St., SE, Washington. The kickoff is at  4 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 15

Tigerlilly Foundation hosts its Pink Boa 5K Run/Walk on Sunday. Proceeds support the organization’s work with young women before, during and after their battle with breast cancer. The event includes a fast, flat 5K course beginning in Fairfax Station, along with music, zumba, yoga, family friendly activities and more. $20-$35. The Leesburg Fine Arts Festival returns this weekend. Historic Downtown Leesburg and Friends of Leesburg Public Arts will transform a busy intersection into an “outdoor gallery” of paintings, sculptures, photography, mixed-media and more. Artists will be on hand. Free. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. At King and Market streets, Leesburg.
