George Allen, Business Leaders Discuss Energy, Regulations, Financing

U.S. Senate candidate met with about a dozen business leaders Friday morning in Springfield.

Energy, Obamacare, government regulations and spending were the hot topics at a morning roundtable discussion Friday between a dozen local business leaders and Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen in Springfield. The former governor and U.S. senator, in his stop at the West Springfield Government Center, said he's optimistic about the future and wants to change the trajectory of the U.S. economy.  "My thoughts on energy are that it should be affordable, reliable and preferably American," said Allen, who backs the construction of the 1,700-mile Keystone XL Pipeline from Canada to Texas, which was rejected earlier this year by President Obama. "We truly have the ability to be strategically energy independent. We don't have to worry …

Bike-to-Work Day Comes to Kingstowne Area

Bikers say event energizes them about commute.

While the Washington metropolitan area is famous for its car-choked commutes, some people gathered in the Kingstowne area on Friday morning to prove that it's possible to bike to work. The riders were participating in Bike-to-Work Day, an event organized locally by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Commuter Connections. The event promotes using bikes to commute to work. On Friday, 12,700 people were expected to participate in Bike-to-Work Day in the Washington metro area, the Washington Business Journal reports.  At a Kingstowne area rest stop on Walker Lane, near the Inova Healthplex, bikers stopped to enjoy refreshments and share stories. "It's better than a cup of coffee," said Mike Salmon, a Virginia Department of …

'Battleship:' A Waterlogged Absurdity You Can Cheer For

PG-13 'Battleship' feels like a two-hour Navy recruitment video.

I'm surprised blue and gold aren't the colors used on the movie poster for "Battleship," along with Go Navy! and Beat Aliens! If you leave your brain at the front door of the multiplex on a day you feel like rooting for the home team, you could do worse than vacillating between cheering and snickering for those two hours of this completely ridiculous, raucous mash-up of "Independence Day," "Pearl Harbor," and "Transformers."  Director Peter Berg, of "Friday Night Lights," "The Kingdom," and "Hancock," knows his way around the camera. So we can try to accept the fact that for some reason he feels the need to release his inner Michael Bay. What results is not exactly a good movie, but one that unapologetically embraces its cliches, even on …

Kaine Talks Rail, Economy and Bipartisanship

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.

U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

According to Governor Kaine: "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. What i will try to do is go in and fight hard for federal support, but make it contingent is the state does the same thing." When Kaine was interviewed, was he asked about the transfer of the Dulles Toll Road from Virginia to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority …   more ›

Police Release Photos of Suspect's Car in Springfield Kidnapping

Car followed victim's car as he was forced to drive to banks.

Fairfax County Police Department detectives have a new clue in the abduction of a Springfield man from his home earlier this month: a photo of a car that could have been used to help the suspected kidnappers.  In the early morning hours of May 9, last Wednesday, three men reportedly kidnapped a man from in front of his Cumberland Avenue home at gunpoint. The suspected kidnappers forced him to drive them in his car to two banks, where he withdrew money from ATMs. After taking the money, the reported kidnappers cut their victim before leaving him crammed in his car's trunk. The suspects abandoned the car in Annandale and fled. The photos, captured on Commerce Street, are of a car following the reported victim's car. While the suspects had …

Home for the Family

Pool + Trampoline + Tire Swing + Hot Tub = The Perfect Family Home just west of Kingstowne.

Jesse and Jill Vaugh may have been destined to make 6136 Burnett St. their family home. Jesse first spied the large house in 2006, while driving through the Rose Hill neighborhood with Jill’s brother. Jesse had been transferred from northern New York to the Washington area for his job with a resort company, and was staying with Jill’s brother while looking for a rental home so Jill and their four children could join him. “When Jesse saw the [Burnett Street] house, he turned to my brother and said, ‘Look at that house. Wouldn’t that be a great house to live in some day?’” said Jill, recounting the tale her husband later told her.  A few months later, after joining Jesse in Washington, Jill saw the same house, unaware that Jesse had also …
