This might be the ultimate ignorant question of the day but here goes: per the job description ofRead More the position, how much time is required of these elected board members during their tenure? 10 hours per week? 20? is it meant to be a part- or full-time job? and how much are they paid? Ms Hynes comments about the lack of time to fully prepare for the meeting is really disheartening. If you don't have the time to do the job, then don't sign up for it. Some days I really wish I could go to work and just do a crappy job...but then again, VA is an at-will state so I would be fired...

School Board is formally a part-time position but, given the size of FCPS (185,000 kids, 14,000Read More employees), it could consume 90 hours a week if you let it. I think they get $25,0000 per year. Nobody does it for the money.

What makes it "demonizing" aren't the stories themselves, but rather the fact that theRead More stories are laid out without specific names, dates, locations, etc. Are there bad apples? Absolutely, but based on the anecdotal evidence presented we don't really know who the bad apples are or under what circumstances the stories arose. Heck, we don't even know what the proportion of problems to non-problems is for the entire system (or for particular schools or particular administrators). As a result, their concern is that the vague negative stories end up sweeping the good people out with the bad.

The online programs they support should be tailored to what teachers and students can use. TheRead More online math books were nothing more than regular texts that were scanned and put online. They were hard to use (especially if you needed to page back and forth to find topics), and they were not downloadable and pages could not be printed. That meant that students could only access their texts in locations where they had internet access - they couldn't download the books to a laptop, e-reader, or iPad if they were traveling or at a location away from home (say at a sports event or practice). They couldn't print homework pages to take with them if they went somewhere without internet access. In short, the online math texts were not practical. If the school system wants to use online texts, the texts should be downloadable and allow printing. They should also add in features such as interactive modules or links to information. The online texts they have now are useless. Give teachers, students, and parents a chance to provide input as to what features would be useful and wanted in online texts.

I don't understand why the school board needs to hire consultants to in order to re-prioritize.

I agree. I would think that would be in a job description for someone who is already a countyRead More employee.

Now if only Hayfield could get one. When the new conferencing occurs this fall, we are the onlyRead More team in our conference that does not have a turf field.
Dr. Billy May 1, 2013 at 11:04 pm
Bathrooms would cost more than the turf field.

This is great for our players, but I can't help but wonder about all the goose poop! O.o I do notRead More know much about a turf field so I have this horrible vision of goose poop just sitting on top of the turf with no where to go! Sorry if I ruined anyone's breakfast!

These rankings are nothing more than proxies for wealth and to a lesser extend demographics. TheRead More 2012 free & reduced populations in these schools are the following: TJ - 2.55% Langley - 1.55%. James Madison - 8.6% McLean - 10.1% W.T. Woodson - 9.9% Oakton is 10.5% and the other Fairfax County high schools are 13.3% up to 60%+. US News should have just said the wealthiest schools in the country notwithstanding their alleged algorithm. The Washington Post challenge index is a fairer measure although none of these are perfect. Standardized test scores are notorious for their biases and correlations and no one has figured out how to truly measure which schools produce the most well rounded children ready to learn and compete in a 21st Century global economy.

It's obvious that both TJ's admissions process and science and technology education in NorthernRead More Virginia's school systems are seriously deficient. Why do we put up with it, year after year?

Ms. Cox also had been the kicker on the varsity football team in her junior year.

CONGRATULATIONS Mrs Fulmore! You are a true blessing of the proverb, it takes a village to raise aRead More child. You give your all in everything you do and that is why the children love you. I am so proud to be your mother. Keep up the good work. Mom Re
