Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here are Memorial Day recipes and ideas for keeping costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.  and, share their tips on how to save money on your Memorial Day feast. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade --perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce -- …

Where's the Cheapest Gas in the Alexandria Area?

Use this gas price locator tool to find the lowest price right now.

by Virginia Patch Staff Gas prices nationwide were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't been able to produce as much gas, which has pushed prices up. "If you can gas up today to prepare for your Memorial Day driving, do so," said …

i agree Brad ... what's the point?? If you are STUPID enough to break the HOV laws knowingly you should get hammered, without warning. Some people make the effort and sacrifice to get three people in their car and others just fly in the face of that and dump all over traditional carpoolers and sluggers. Shame on them ... and no mercy.   more ›

Such a shame that they have been unable to get any high end tenants into Hilltop (with the exception of Wegmans). Just another boring strip mall with cleaners and fast food. Seriously, how hard is it to attract a higher end restaurant? Or some good retail stores? If these are the types of stores they are targeting I would have lobbied Fairfax to only approve the Wegmans and nothing else!! To echo…   more ›

Speak Out: VA Dems Say GOP Ticket Is Anti-Gay, Bad for Business

Democratic leaders and gay advocates are slamming the Virginia Republican Party's ticket — Ken Cuccinelli for governor and E.W. Jackson for lieutenant governor. Do you agree with them?

Democratic Party Chair of Virginia Charniele Herring, state Sen. Adam Ebbin and gay-rights advocate James Parrish held a teleconference Tuesday afternoon lambasting the “dangerous and hateful attacks on gay and lesbian Virginians that Republican candidates Ken Cuccinelli and E.W. Jackson have made a centerpiece of their careers.” Herring asked why an employer would want to bring business to the commonwealth when gubernatorial candidate Cuccinelli and lieutenant governor candidate Jackson “demonize” gay employees. “It’s damaging to our commonwealth’s reputation as an inclusive place to live,” she said. Jackson has labeled gay people perverted and “frankly very sick people psychologically, mentally and emotionally,” according to the …
