Ebbin Speaks Out Against Bill That Will Allow Adoption Agencies to Ban Gay Couples From Adopting

Calls move a 'dramatic step backward' for Virginia

The Virginia Senate on Thursday passed a bill that allows private adoption agencies receiving state funding to bar gay couples from adopting children. Virginia will be only the second state in the country to pass a law that allows adoption agencies to ban gay couples from adoptions, joining North Dakota. The bill also applies to foster care agencies. Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30th District), the state General Assembly's first openly gay member, who represents parts of Fairfax County, Arlington and the City of Alexandria, spoke out against the bill Thursday. "Let's be clear about what this bill is about, it has always been about denying GLBT Virginians the opportunity to form families...this has been clear since its inception," Ebbin said from the…

Chap Petersen did what? He voted against protecting children from harmful treatment. Thank you, LawMom for pointing this out. As friends and neighbors, we need to find out his thinking on this one. A. Will Radle, Jr. Will@VA8.com   more ›

Who Is Tim McGhee?

Republican state Senate candidate in the 30th District builds message around life, liberty and justice.

Tim McGhee doesn’t have many campaign signs dotting the medians of major roadways. The Republican candidate for state Senate in the 30th District believes they’re somewhat of a waste. Instead, McGhee has handed out business cards throughout his campaign inscribed with three big words that make up his message: Life, liberty and justice. “These things are going to go a long way,” McGhee said. “These things fit in people’s pockets. Palm cards don’t. As long as it’s what’s coming out of my pocket, I am going to make sure that everything that’s spent is spent as effectively as possible.” And McGhee believes it’s that type of thinking that will appeal to voters. He says he’s tried to be the kind of candidate he would want to elect—somebody who …

Ebbin Says He Offers Progressive Voice, Richmond Experience to 30th District

Current Virginia delegate faces off in Democratic primary on Tuesday.

On Election Day in 1968, a teacher in Commack on Long Island gathered her class around the flagpole to discuss the meaning of the day. As kids began to chant support for Richard Nixon, one voice cheered for Hubert Humphrey, Nixon's challenger. That boy was Adam Ebbin. More than 40 years later, Ebbin, a Virginia delegate for the 49th district since 2004, is running for the 30th district Senate seat. He faces off against City of Alexandria Councilman Rob Krupicka and Arlington school board member Libby Garvey in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, Aug. 23. Ebbin came to Washington, D.C. to study political science at American University. In the early '70s, he worked on the campaign of former Sen. Gary Hart (D-Colo.). But despite his passion …

I absolutely adore Adam Ebbin - and I know how hard he has worked as my representative in the 49th District of the House of Delegates. ~ However, I think what we're missing in the Virginia Senate is a voice who can speak from local government experience. Rob understands city budgets. He understands school budgets. He understands what is required for an efficient local transportation system. He …   more ›

Krupicka Believes Agenda Sets Him Apart

State senate candidate says creating local-state partnerships will be critical to future of Northern Virginia.

Rob Krupicka argues he’s the only candidate in the Democratic primary for the 30th District state senate seat with a clear, focused agenda for the office. In a race against two other similarly-aligned party members—Del. Adam Ebbin (D-49th) and Arlington School Board member Libby Garvey—Krupicka believes it is this agenda, one he says has specific plans to boost education in the state and to create state-local partnerships to build mass transit and environmental solutions for Northern Virginia, that sets him apart. “We’re asking people to hire us for a job that we could be in for a very long time,” Krupicka said. “I think people need to not just understand what your experience is or what your values are. I think they need to understand what…

Seems to me that Krupicka will get more done as a city councilman and member of the state Board of Education than he will as a part-time legislator in a sharply divided General Assembly -- I imagine citizens of Alexandria would rather have him stay there than see his efforts diluted in the Senate.   more ›

Alexandria NAACP Hosts 30th Senate District Debate

Candidates discussed issues such as affordable housing, universal health care, and felony conviction concerns

With 18 days before the local Democratic primary, candidates for the 30th district senate seat continued to try and distinguish themselves from each other at their latest debate last night—hosted by the Alexandria branch of the NAACP at their August meeting. The lone Republican candidate, Tim McGhee, was also in attendence and offered an often distinct outlook from his Democratic counterparts. The audience questioned candidates on issues such as affordable housing, universal health care, and felony conviction concerns before a crowd of about 35 citizens. All Democratic candidates—Virginia Delegate Adam Ebbin (49th District), Arlington County School Board Chair Libby Garvey and Alexandria City Councilman Ron Krupicka—said they were …

Mount Vernon Dems Host Second 30th State Senate District Forum

Three candidates vying for retiring incumbent Sen. Patsy Ticer's seat face Aug. 23 primary

Personalities and political backgrounds dominated the debate among the three Democrats vying for Virginia’s 30th district senate seat at the Mount Vernon District Democratic Committee public forum last night. All are concerned about economic expansion in the district and local transportation problems. None support loosening gun control laws in densely populated northern Virginia.  And each sees themselves as more qualified than the others to take on Richmond with agendas of an improved educational system, increased business opportunities and an eco-friendly environment. In his opening statements, Delegate Adam Ebbin (D-49th District)—a four-term member of the General Assembly and former Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Labor …
