'Diamond in the Ruff' to Benefit Mutts Matter

Businesses of all shapes and sizes donate to charity, and they often give to the large, name brand organizations with big marketing budgets. Everyone can rally around the fight to cure cancer, help kids in need or support victims of natural disasters, and all of these things are very worthy and important causes. What’s not as common, however, is to see prominent businesses get behind local dog rescue. Animal Welfare League Offering Pet Adoption Discounts

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is offering discounts and holding adoption events through Sept. 11.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is hosting a "Back-to-School Adoption Event" at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter from now until Sept. 11. During this period, the organization is offering adoption discounts on its adoptable pets.  Aug. 15-21: Rush Week  You have the opportunity to become an AWLA adopter and meet "brothers" and "sisters" from Delta Omicron Gamma (DOG) and Kappa Alpha Tau (KAT). AWLA is also holding a Canine Cruise on Thursday, Aug. 16 featuring AWLA alumni.  During Rush Week, adoption fees are reduced by 50 percent for members of DOG and KAT. Sweet Carolina is an affectionate, playful and good-natured Bassett Hound mix in search of a loving home.

  Meet sweet Carolina, an adorable Bassett Hound/Border Collie mix with a friendly disposition and an engaging spirit. Carolina is not your typical laid-back Bassett Hound; she still has a nice mix of youthful energy and playfulness to share with her new family. She’s only about a year-and-a-half old and weighs 28 pounds, has a sweet smile, big brown eyes, cute floppy ears and a gorgeous, shiny black-and-white coat. She is a friendly, affectionate pup who would be great with kids and other dogs, and is always up for a new adventure. City Honors Animal Welfare League of Alexandria for 65 Years of Service

Council presents organization with a proclamation.

On Tuesday evening, the Alexandria City Council presented the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria with a proclamation honoring the 65th anniversary of its charter. “This organization raises a great deal of money to have the kind of shelter and programs we do,” Councilwoman Del Pepper said. “I like to think we’re the best.” Through its work promoting pet adoptions, assistance in spaying and neutering animals, education and community service efforts, the AWLA plays a huge part in managing the pet population of not just Alexandria but in neighboring communities as well.
