Animal Welfare League of Alexandria to Host Black Friday Adoption Event

Adopters will be able to decide on and pay their adoption fee for the animal of their choice.

If a new pet is on your shopping list this Black Friday, you're in luck: The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) will host a Black Friday Adoption Special for homeless animals at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter next week. The event will last from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23. As part of event, potential adopters can name their own adoption fee for all animals ages six months and older, according to a press release. Animals five months old and younger will be available for adoption at the normal fee. While adoption. The minimum adoption fee required is $10. Adoption fees for adult dogs and cats usually range around $150 and $120, respectively. The cost includes: spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations, health screenings, …

Animal Welfare League Offering Pet Adoption Discounts

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is offering discounts and holding adoption events through Sept. 11.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is hosting a "Back-to-School Adoption Event" at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter from now until Sept. 11. During this period, the organization is offering adoption discounts on its adoptable pets.  Aug. 15-21: Rush Week  You have the opportunity to become an AWLA adopter and meet "brothers" and "sisters" from Delta Omicron Gamma (DOG) and Kappa Alpha Tau (KAT). AWLA is also holding a Canine Cruise on Thursday, Aug. 16 featuring AWLA alumni.  During Rush Week, adoption fees are reduced by 50 percent for members of DOG and KAT. Animal Welfare League Shows Dangers of Leaving Dogs in Hot Cars

A demonstration car showed the temperature had reached 140 degrees inside a car by noon on Thursday

“Never leave your dog in a hot car” is the message the Animal Welfare League is sending through its demonstration car parked on the sidewalk in front of Alexandria's Vola Lawson Animal Shelter. A Fiat with stuffed animal dogs and thermometers inside showcases just how quickly the inside of a car can get on a hot day. On Thursday by 10 a.m., the thermometers had reached 102 degrees. By noon, it was 140 degrees inside the car even with the windows slightly open. The shelter has the car on display Friday as well. “A dog does not perspire like a person. It pants,” said Joy Wilson, chief animal control officer for the City of Alexandria. “When the only thing a dog is breathing is hot air, brain damage sets in along with convulsions, seizures …

City Honors Animal Welfare League of Alexandria for 65 Years of Service

Council presents organization with a proclamation.

On Tuesday evening, the Alexandria City Council presented the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria with a proclamation honoring the 65th anniversary of its charter. “This organization raises a great deal of money to have the kind of shelter and programs we do,” Councilwoman Del Pepper said. “I like to think we’re the best.” Through its work promoting pet adoptions, assistance in spaying and neutering animals, education and community service efforts, the AWLA plays a huge part in managing the pet population of not just Alexandria but in neighboring communities as well.
