There's increasing debate over whether March Madness makes office workers more or less productive, but it starts this week either way. March Madness 2013 first-round games started Tuesday and the tournament doesn’t end until the final buzzer of the last game on Monday, April 8. Here in Virginia, a number of men’s college basketball teams are “in the dance” – Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Liberty University, James Madison University (JMU) and, in DC, Georgetown. March Madness is upon us! Have you filled out your bracket yet? Virginia flavor - James Madison, the No. 16 seed in the East Region, opens play Wednesday. The Dukes, who have not made the NCAA Tournament since 1994, got there by winning the Colonial Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, will play No. 16 seed Long Island University in a first-round game in Dayton at 6:45 p.m. The winner of that game goes on to a matchup with No. 1 seed Indiana on Friday. Virginia Commonwealth, a Final Four team two years ago, enters this year's NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed. The Hayfield Hawks will go head-to-head with the Herndon Hornets Friday night.
The Hayfield varsity boys' basketball team will play against the Herndon Hornets at 7:30 p.m. at Herndon High School. The Hawks started practicing Wednesday specifically in preparation for Friday's game. Hawks Head Coach Carlos Poindexter said the team is preparing for Herndon's strong point guards, Trevon Wright and William Ferguson. Poindexter also said the team is anxious to see how they will handle the Hornets on defense. "We're looking forward to how we are going to handle their press because they're a pressure team that likes to trap," Poindexter said. RICHMOND—Edison’s historic playoff run came to an end on Friday night with a 68-61 loss to Petersburg at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. The Eagles jumped on top of the state’s No. 1-ranked team in the first 12 minutes of the game, building a 25-21 lead when Michael Lewis put-back Tyrone Mackall’s miss. But Petersburg reeled off seven straight points—led by guard Frank Mason—to take a 28-25 lead which they never relinquished. Mason, a Towson commit, finished with 30 electrifying points and at only 6-foot-1, led everyone with 15 rebounds. RICHMOND—West Springfield's senior trio of Logan Battle, April Robinson and Jordan Miller advanced to the VHSL Class AAA tournament for the third year in a row, but saw their storied careers come to an end Friday night in the opening round at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center in Richmond. Highland Springs, a local school and the Central Region champion, proved too fast and aggressive for the Spartans. The Springers slashed to the basket and got in front of West Springfield's passes, building a 12-point lead before ultimately winning 53-46. Eagles will go to the state tournament for the first time since 1970.
The Edison boys’ varsity basketball team will play Westfield High School in the Virginia AAA Northern Region final tonight. The Eagles (19-8) defeated Fairfax High School in a gripping 69-64 overtime win on Saturday, Feb. 25. According to the Washington Post, Eagle senior center Matt Murphy scored 24 points in a win that secured Edison a place in the state tournament for the first time since 1970. Senior Tyrone Mackall scored all eight of Edison’s points during overtime. The Eagles face Westfield (23-4), who defeated McLean 55-41, at 8 p.m. in at Robinson Secondary School, 5035 Sideburn Road, Fairfax, Va.

As the regular season winds down for winter sports teams, many are making a final push to finish strong before district tournament play commences. Here’s a round-up of sports highlights from Alexandria and southern Fairfax County. Edison: Edison girls’ basketball picked up two wins last week. The Eagles defeated Hayfield 53-40 on Jan. 9 and Washington-Lee 47-31 on Jan. 12. Hayfield: The Lady Hawks basketball team grabbed their fourth win of the season on Jan. 12 with a 64-33 win over Falls Church. The Edison Eagles beat the Hayfield Hawks 53-40 in girls varsity basketball action on Monday night in front of a spirited crowd that wasn’t deterred by the season’s first snowfall. The win upped the Eagles record to 8-4 on the season and gave them their third consecutive “Bird Bowl” victory over the rival Hawks, who fell to 3-9 on the season. The Eagles raced out to an early advantage but the Hawks trimmed the lead to 24-23 at the half. In the second half, the Hawks briefly took the lead, but Edison took control midway through the third quarter, behind strong play from the Sherrill sisters, Ruth and Sheila, who finished with 16 and 10 points respectively. The Edison Eagles captured the first leg of this year’s Bird Bowl, soundly beating the Hayfield Hawks 67-43, before a partisan home crowd that was decked out in “Dread the Red” t-shirts. Edison used their superior size and strength in the paint to dominate on both ends of the court. They led throughout the game, extending the lead to 25 points in the fourth quarter. The win improved the Eagles’ record to 6-5 on the season, while the Hawks dropped to 5-8. It was Edison’s third consecutive win over the Hawks dating back to last season. Eagles' upset bid against Titans falls short in a 55-53 loss.
The Edison Eagles basketball squad suffered a heartbreaking 55-53 loss at T.C. Williams on Friday night before a raucous crowd that spilled out onto the court in a wild celebration after the Titans capped a come-from-behind win by nailing four free throws in the last minute of the game. The Eagles led for most of the contest, but T.C. Williams nipped ahead by just a point, 49-48, with just more than two minutes to play.
