Herring represents central and west Alexandria in the state House of Delegates.
Charniele Herring, the state delegate whose district includes West End Alexandria, was selected Saturday to lead the Democratic Party of Virginia. Herring was voted into the top spot during the party’s Central Committee meeting Saturday morning in Williamsburg. She released the following statement Saturday: "I am humbled by the strength and diversity of Virginia Democrats," she said. "I look forward to fighting every day to ensure we continue to elect Democrats here in this great Commonwealth." Outgoing party Chairman Brian Moran announced his resignation last month. Herring has served in the House of Delegates since 2009 and is currently minority whip. She has told Patch she plans to keep her delegate seat while serving as party …

The two U.S. Senate candidates talked about sequestration and the economy in McLean Thursday.
MCLEAN — The potential $500 billion in defense cuts looming in Washington took center stage Thursday at the Capital One Conference Center during the first of three debates between U.S. Senate candidates Tim Kaine and George Allen. The cuts — $1 trillion in total under the banner of "sequestration" — could cost the Old Dominion thousands of jobs, particularly in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. Once meant as a stopgap measure, the continuing partisan divide in Washington has transformed them into a real threat. Kaine, a Democrat and former governor, presented his plan to solve the problem, which largely revolves around ending Bush-era tax cuts to individuals making more than $500,000 annually and cutting subsidies to the five largest …

State party convention drew more than 2,000 to the city of Fairfax this weekend.
FAIRFAX — Perhaps U.S. Sen. Mark Warner put it best: "In 2008, we changed the guard. In 2012, we need to guard the change." More than 2,000 Democrats from across the commonwealth descended on George Mason University this weekend for the Democratic Party of Virginia's State Convention. The gathering served as part pep rally, part organizational meeting as activists mobilize for November. Party leaders had similar messages, previewing what they will try to hammer home while Virginia is in the national spotlight as a battleground state for the U.S. presidency. That message, they say, is that the right-wing takeover of the Republican Party has made this country, and this state, unrecognizable and infringes on the rights of gays, women and …

Candidate for U.S. Senate spoke to crowd of more than 300 at the Democratic Party of Virginia coordinated campaign headquarters.
Former Gov. Tim Kaine (D) spoke to a crowd of more than 300 Democrats on Sunday at the party's new coordinated campaign headquarters in Huntington about the importance of rallying the base for victory in his U.S. Senate election, his colleagues' races across Virginia, and President Obama's reelection. Looking out over the crowded room, Kaine said, "we're going to need a bigger headquarters next time." The headquarters, located at 5914 N. Kings Hwy., will serve as a base for all Virginia Democrats on the ballot in 2012. With state delegates and senators just elected in November, Rep. Jim Moran and Kaine will be the main campaigns in focus locally. Not only is the campaign headquarters across the street from the Huntington Metro station, but…

The next Virginia Governor's race is two years away, and he's setting himself up for a run
It's 7 a.m. on a hot July morning and Terry McAuliffe jumps into the passenger seat of his hybrid Chevy Tahoe. On this Saturday in McLean, Va., the heat index will reach 110 degrees. The country is fired up over the debt ceiling fight in Washington, and McAuliffe, 54, wide-eyed and grinning, looks like a kid who's just been told he's going to McDonald's. He pulls a map of Virginia from the glove box. It's peppered with magic marker circles (You can see a digital version of the map on his campaign-like website). "Love the map!" McAuliffe says, almost shouts, and then sips coffee from a travel mug. "It's fun going to these tiny towns. To them I'm the former chair of the DNC, and it's fun for coal miners to get to know you, to get rid of the …
