An upcoming tax holiday will help Virginians prepare for hurricane season, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation. Ahead of hurricane season's start on June 1, there will be no sales tax in Virginia from May 25 to May 31 on certain items that would be useful in the event of a hurricane. Exempt items can be seen here (PDF). While there will be no sales tax on generators and power cables that cost less than $1,000, most of the purchases must be under $60 to qualify for the sales tax holiday. Many of the eligible items have uses outside of hurricane preparation, including duct tape, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and cell phone chargers. Bikers say event energizes them about commute.
While the Washington metropolitan area is famous for its car-choked commutes, some people gathered in the Kingstowne area on Friday morning to prove that it's possible to bike to work. The riders were participating in Bike-to-Work Day, an event organized locally by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Commuter Connections. The event promotes using bikes to commute to work. On Friday, 12,700 people were expected to participate in Bike-to-Work Day in the Washington metro area, the Washington Business Journal reports. At a Kingstowne area rest stop on Walker Lane, near the Inova Healthplex, bikers stopped to enjoy refreshments and share stories. New restaurant offers sandwiches, salads and soups
If you're looking to eat a sandwich or salad in Springfield, you may want to apply for citizenship in the Sandwich Republic. The new restaurant just opened last week in Springfield Plaza. Sandwich Republic, located at 7020-C Old Keene Mill Road, shares the same building with the Springfield Noodles & Company and Waba Grill, a teriyaki restaurant that hasn't opened yet. In addition to sandwiches and salads, Sandwich Republic also sells soups and pizza-like foccacia. So far, the restaurant has garnered mostly positive reviews on review site Yelp!.

Hotel is expected to be finished in late 2013.
Visitors to Kingstowne and Springfield will have another hotel option by the end of 2013, according to a spokesperson for Embassy Suites. The chain is building a new hotel in Newington. Located on Loisdale Road near the road's intersection with the Fairfax County Parkway by I-95 the area was the site of another hotel. The hotel will likely be finished by November 2013, according to Embassy Suites spokesperson Maggie Giddens. Construction began earlier this year. Embassy Suites is owned by Hilton International. The Newington hotel will join other Embassy Suites in Washington and Northern Virginia, including one in Old Town Alexandria.

Plan changes add a mezzanine to a building at the shopping center, change site's permitted uses.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Tuesday took action to speed up the approval of proposed changes to the Hilltop Village Center, the future site of Kingstowne's Wegmans. Developers proposed changes that would add a mezzanine to one of the buildings at the shopping center and changing the landscape buffer behind Wegmans to accomodate additional utilities and the widening of Telegraph Road. The changes would also add some new, permitted secondary uses to the site that could allow different businesses to open there than were originally permitted. The amended secondary uses would allow health clubs, child care centers, fast food restaurants, colleges or universities, special education schools, convenience stores and/or veterinary …

The new Springfield Town Center will feature a health club, a movie theater and a "restaurant row" of between eight and ten restaurants, according to Mike McClanahan, chief of staff for Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay (D). "The project's under way," McClanahan said at a community meeting last week organized by the Lee District Association of Civic Associations. "Everyone's meeting with everyone." In July, all of the mall's stores (with the exception of Macy's, Target and JCPenney) will close to allow for construction.
