Petersburg Spoils Edison's Playoff Hopes

Crimson Wave halts Eagles in state quarterfinals, 68-61

RICHMOND—Edison’s historic playoff run came to an end on Friday night with a 68-61 loss to Petersburg at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. The Eagles jumped on top of the state’s No. 1-ranked team in the first 12 minutes of the game, building a 25-21 lead when Michael Lewis put-back Tyrone Mackall’s miss. But Petersburg reeled off seven straight points—led by guard Frank Mason—to take a 28-25 lead which they never relinquished. Mason, a Towson commit, finished with 30 electrifying points and at only 6-foot-1, led everyone with 15 rebounds. Edison Girls Defeat Hayfield 53-40

Ruth Sherrill led all scorers with 16 points as Edison upped its record to 8-4 on the season.

The Edison Eagles beat the Hayfield Hawks 53-40 in girls varsity basketball action on Monday night in front of a spirited crowd that wasn’t deterred by the season’s first snowfall. The win upped the Eagles record to 8-4 on the season and gave them their third consecutive “Bird Bowl” victory over the rival Hawks, who fell to 3-9 on the season. The Eagles raced out to an early advantage but the Hawks trimmed the lead to 24-23 at the half. In the second half, the Hawks briefly took the lead, but Edison took control midway through the third quarter, behind strong play from the Sherrill sisters, Ruth and Sheila, who finished with 16 and 10 points respectively.
