Top news of the week from our Patches around Virginia and DC.

Patch has 31 community sites in Virginia and D.C. Here are some of the top stories from around the region over the past week. 20. Alexandria's City Council had asked that any purchaser not turn the buildings into luxury apartments that could displace its current tenants who require more affordable housing. That message was passed on to the new buyers, according to VDOT, but was not a condition of the sale. 19. On the west side of Alexandria, the City Planning Commission gave the go-ahead to major rezoning in the Beauregard area that will tear down …

DWI Arrests Down in Franconia Police District

County seeing fewer DWI arrests overall from 3,223 in 2011 to 2,625 in 2012. Take a look at this video from Patch’s ride along with Fairfax County Police Officer Sepehri.

As Saturday night turned to Sunday morning, the lights atop Fairfax County Police Department cruisers along Leesburg Pike lit up the night sky like swarms of blue fireflies. The routine traffic stops were plentiful but the McLean District officers weren’t finding many drivers under the influence. In the Franconia District in 2011, 430 people were arrested and charged with DWI and in 2012 only 318 were arrested. The diminishing number of driving while intoxicated arrests is a trend that has been consistent in the district since 2011. That year, 433 people were arrested and charged with DWI. In 2012, that number dropped to 350 DWI arrests in the McLean District - which covers Merrifield, Dunn Loring, Falls Church, McLean, Tyson’s Corner and …

Heather, In most cases of molestation, it is hard for and eight year old to tell anyone. And if the child does tell someone and not believed or heard, they will not try again. It seems that you don't know what you are talking about when it comes to being molested. Perhaps before you open your mouth to something you don't know about you should keep it shut and don't say anything at all or find out…   more ›

To Attract a New County Executive, Money Is No Object

Panel, citizens agree a higher salary is needed to attract the right candidate for an impossible job

"We’re not going to get somebody in here on Tony’s salary," said a constituent at Supervisor John Cook's Town Hall on Monday night.  Fairfax County Executive Tony Griffin is scheduled to retire in April, and the Board of Supervisors has begun the process to replace him. According to Cook, Griffin currently earns about $240,000 a year. School superintendent Jack Dale earns about $320,000 a year, and many in the room said that discrepancy would need to be adjusted if the county wanted to attract top candidates for county executive. Supervisor Cook agreed. "The Board of Supervisors hasn't yet set any parameters, but when you're as big as Fairfax County, you find who you want and you get them," he said. "We’re going to pay what we need to pay…

Gymboree Teacher May Have Died Before Car Struck Pole

Casey Noriega's family awaits results of state medical examiner's office autopsy.

The Fairfax County Police Department is looking into the possibility that Casey Noriega, the 29-year-old gym teacher and mother who was killed Saturday when her car struck a pole in Kingstowne, may have died before the crash, according to family friends. FCPD investigates all fatal accidents and it's possible Noriega could have suffered from some medical condition prior to the crash, said FCPD spokesman Don Gotthardt. The state medical examiner's office determines on a case-by-case basis whether someone dies from a medical condition or the blunt force trauma of a car accident, he said. Noriega's fatal accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, after she left her job at Gymboree Music and Arts, 318 S. Pickett St., where she was a …
