Guns in Schools: Virginia Educators Concerned about Governor's Interest in School Staff Carrying Weapons

Representatives of three state education agencies issued a rebuttal to Gov. McDonnell's comments about possibly allowing teachers and other school staff to carry weapons.

Virginia educators said they are concerned about the governor’s interest in allowing teachers and staff members to carry guns into schools, noting violence prevention isn’t an issue of more guns, but more funding. Officials with three education associations—the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP), the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP) and the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS)—released a statement Friday. The statement came shortly after the National Rifle Association (NRA) called for "armed security" around schools but was in response to statements earlier this week by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. VIDEO: Santa Claus Visits Clermont Elementary

Kids lined up outside Clermont Elementary School to tell Santa what they want for Christmas.

Students, teachers, administrators and parents stood outside Clermont Elementary School Tuesday morning while Santa and his helpers from the Fairfax County Police Department spoke to them about their holiday wishes. Rudolph, one of Santa's elves and Mrs. Claus were also in attendance to remind the children to be nice. "Your teacher has my cell phone number, so she can tell me if you've been bad or good," Santa said to the students. Santa Claus made his way to a few Fairfax County Public Schools Tuesday including Groveton Elementary School and Terra Centre Elementary School. Budget Proposal Cuts Adult and Community Education Staff in Half

While the Fairfax County Public Schools' proposed $2.4 billion budget touts faculty expansion and teacher compensation, it leaves out its plan to cut the staff of the county's adult and community education program, then forcing them to reapply for half as many positions. Last week, Adult and Community Education (ACE) staff received notice that 50 percent of their jobs will be eliminated. Only a hint of reorganization is mentioned in the proposed budget, which is open to resident comment in a public hearing Monday night. I have taken ACE courses for years and they have improved my career skills resulting in a higher income which has benefited the state and county in higher tax payment. ACE is one of the great programs available to Fairfax County citizens.
