Preliminary statistics show 812 vehicles were reported stolen last year in Fairfax County, a decline from 2011 and 2010.
A preliminary police report shows that a grand total of 812 vehicles were reported stolen in 2012 in Fairfax County —143 of which were reported in the Franconia Police District. FCPD saw a decline in vehicle thefts compared to 2011 and 2010 when 881 and 963 vehicles were reported stolen in the county respectively. Of the 963 vehicle thefts in 2010, 161 were reported in the Franconia Police District, according to previous FCPD reports. According to Auto Theft Info, vehicle thefts have declined nationwide since the 1990s but is still the most expensive property crime in the United States. The FBI recently launched a new national website dedicated to identifying unknown bank robbers from the FBI’s 56 field offices, according to a recent news release from the Department of Justice. The website features traditional wanted posters, surveillance pictures of unknown bank robbers and will allow the public to search by the unknown robber's nickname, location and date of the robbery. In fiscal year 2012, 49 bank robberies occurred in the Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia areas — 15 in D.C. and 34 in Northern Virginia. This amount accounts for the fewest number of robberies in more than ten years, according to the news release. FBI's new office would be located west of Springfield Metro station.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation's looking for a new home in the Washington metro area, Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay is pushing for the Bureau to relocate to Springfield. According to Kingstowne Patch, the FBI has been considering moving from its current headquarters on Pennsylvania Avenue since November. On Tuesday, McKay introduced a board matter to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors that would recommend to the FBI, the General Services Administration, and Fairfax County's members of Congress that the FBI relocate to office space owned by the GSA next to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station. Neighbor says Pentagon suspect lived with his father in Franconia townhouse
UPDATE 4:14 p.m.: The FBI has released more information about Yonathan Melaku, including his military service record. UPDATE 2:02 p.m: Melaku lived in a townhouse on the 6200 block of Sage Drive, not on William Edgar Drive, as Patch originally reported. A Marine, 22-year-old Yonathan Melaku, was seen wandering in the cemetery after hours, around 1:30 am on June 17. According to the WashingtonPost, Melaku ran from the authorities, which sparked further alarm, before being detained by US Park Police. http://bit.ly/mDRxyQ   more ›
