Giant Food to Celebrate 77th Anniversary Wednesday with Free Birthday Cake

All 170 area stores will offer free slice of cake to customers from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Help Giant Food celebrate 77 years as a DC-area grocer Wednesday by stopping by its Giant Food store at 5870 Kingstowne Blvd. in Kingstowne for a slice of birthday cake. The store will be celebrating with free cake from 3-8 p.m. Giant will serve cake at all of its stores and all customers are welcome to stop by for free cake, according to a news release. The store chain got its start in 1936 when N.M. Cohen and Samuel Lehrman teamed up to open the first supermarket at Georgia Avenue and Park Road in Washington, DC. Today, Giant serves communities at 170 stores in Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland and Delaware. Giant Food Stores Collect Toys for Tots

Toys will be collected at neighborhood Giant locations.

The grocery store chain  Giant Food has partnered with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to collect toys for underprivileged children at area stores. Locations such as the Giant store on Kingstowne Boulevard will accept donations. Giant, based in Landover, Md., also donated $25,000 last week to support children in need across the mid-Atlantic region. Toys will be collected at 170 Giant stores throughout the holiday season. This year marks the second year of a partnership between the two organizations.
