Landmark-area residents gathered for a public rally Saturday morning to protest the construction of an Interstate 395 HOT lanes off-ramp at Turkeycock Run. The ramp is being built in the Edsall Road area of Fairfax County, just south of Alexandria. About 90 people attended the rally to speak out against the ramp, which they believe will bring heavy traffic and pollution to the community. Landmark resident and Vietnam veteran Sonny Morrow was exposed to Agent Orange during the war and has trouble breathing today. A new Interstate 395 HOT lanes off-ramp at Turkeycock Run, he’s afraid, will exacerbate his health problems. “I think it’s going to be a lot harder breathing, and that’s what my issues are,” Morrow told Patch. “I have a hard enough time breathing in bad weather and when the pollutants are high, and this is not going to help whatsoever.” The Virginia Department of Transportation is constructing a high-occupancy toll lanes off-ramp in the Edsall Road area in Fairfax County, just south of Alexandria. Community members say off-ramp under construction would bring traffic, pollution to Landmark area of Alexandria.
Community members protesting a Virginia Department of Transportation high-occupancy toll lanes off-ramp from Interstate 395 in the Landmark community are holding a public rally against the ramp April 6. The “Delay the Ramp” public rally will take place from 10 to 11 a.m., rain or shine, at the Stevenson Avenue cul-de-sac (at the end between Landmark Mews and Overlook). All residents living on both sides of I-395 between Edsall Road and Duke Street are invited. Children are welcome. Landmark-area residents say they are concerned about health risks from air pollution, but a VDOT environmental assessment says pollutant levels will remain low.
Several homeowners associations in the Landmark area are supporting residents' efforts to protest a proposed Virginia Department of Transportation HOT lanes off-ramp at Turkeycock Run on Interstate 395. VDOT is currently building 29 miles of high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes extending from Stafford County to the Edsall Road area in Fairfax County, just south of Alexandria. Construction could begin this spring
The Commonwealth of Virginia and Fluor-Transurban reached a $940 million in-principle agreement, and construction of nearly 30 miles of High Occupancy Toll lanes on Interstate 95 may begin next spring. “Through this action, we will put to work nearly $1 billion in private sector investment to address one of Virginia’s most critical transportation needs,” said Virginia Gov.
