Hayfield Elementary School Secured Wednesday After Report of Suspicious Man in Surrounding Area

FCPD received a report of a suspect in the area early Wednesday morning.

Hayfield Elementary School and Hayfield Secondary School were in a "secure the building" status Wednesday morning after the Fairfax County Police Department received a report of a suspicious man in the surrounding neighborhood near Buckhaven Court and Welsch Court. PFC Don Gotthardt said they received the call between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. The resident reported seeing a man dressed in a black sweatshirt going from house to house in an attempt to break into a residence. However, the suspect was unable to get into any of the homes. John Torre with Fairfax County Public Schools said the two schools were not on lockdown, but the buildings were secured for the safety of students, faculty and staff. Virginia Boys Lacrosse: Edison Falls to McLean in Playoffs

The two teams played Tuesday night at 7 p.m.; Hayfield and Lee season results.

The Edison High School Eagles boys lacrosse team lost to McLean Tuesday night, 10-7, taking them out of the running for the Northern Region title. The Eagles had a pretty strong season this year with an overall record of 15-2 and a conference record of 6-1. Unlike Edison, Hayfield Secondary School ended its season earlier this month with a loss against Mount Vernon High School, 6-5. The Hawks had a rocky season this year with an overall record of 5-7 and a conference record of 4-3. Lee High School also ended its season earlier this month with a loss to W.T. Woodson, 16-1. Lee High School Hires New Girls Basketball Coach

Amy Lee returns to the Lancers after teaching and coaching in Miami at Hillel Community School.

Lee High School recently announced they have hired Amy Lee as the new girls basketball coach, according to a recent news release. Lee returns to the high school after two years of teaching and coach in Miami, FL at Hillel Community School, where she contributed to building the foundation for the girl’s basketball program. Before moving to Florida, Lee was a physical education teacher and a varsity assistant for the Lancers under Harold Jackson during the 2010-2011 season. Before that season, Lee coached for three seasons at Harmony High School in Harmony, FL. While at Harmony, she helped lead the girls’ varsity team to an overall record of 49-23 and finished as runner up in the Orange Belt Conference. Lee started her coaching career in …

Hayfield Secondary Varsity Baseball Schedule

The Hayfield Hawks started their baseball season in March.

The Hayfield Secondary School baseball team has gotten off to a rocky start since their season opener against Mount Vernon March 21. The Hawks beat Mount Vernon, 10-0 then lost the next two games against McLean (4-8) and West Potomac (1-11). Hayfield beat Wakefield Tuesday, 11-2 and lost to Oakton High Wednesday, 3-17. Hayfield's current season record is 2-3 and they have a long season ahead of them. The Hawks will take on the Edison Eagles 6 p.m. Friday at Hayfield. Hayfield Student Author, Inspired by C.S. Lewis, Writes Fantasy Trilogy

Bezi Yohannes, 16, published her first book 'Secrets of Meynch' in December.

At the age of 11, Bezi Yohannes irritated her parents because all she ever did was write. It's not that her parents didn't want her to write, but she dedicated hours of her time to writing and seemed to have little interest in anything else. At a young age, Bezi said she fell in love with reading — mostly fantasy and medieval-inspired novels. Because she was enthralled with the tales of adventure in the books — specifically C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia — Bezi set out to create her own fantasy world. "I feel complete when I'm reading. And when I'm writing I can communicate these different experiences and go into my imagination and create a detailed fantasy world," she said. Bezi credits C.S. Kingstowne Students Named to 2013 All-Virginia Choruses

Students from Lee, Edison, and Hayfield will perform as a group with other students from Fairfax County April 27.

Of the 66 Fairfax County Public Schools students named to 2013 All-Virginia Choruses or chosen to serve as alternates, 16 of them are students at high schools in the Kingstowne area. Students chosen will perform together April 27 at Hanover High School in Mechanicsburg. One student was chosen for the chorus from Edison High School; six were chosen from Hayfield Secondary School and; three from Lee High School will join in the performance. Edison High School: Hayfield High School: Lee High School: Virginia All-State Chorus is sponsored by the Virginia Choral Directors Association, an affiliated unit of the Virginia Music Educators Association. Kingstowne-Area Students Earn Regional Scholastic Writing Awards

Students from schools in the Kingstowne and Rose Hill areas were recently recognized for their achievements.

Seventy-two students from 22 Fairfax County Public Schools recently earned a total of 113 regional awards in the 2013 Scholastic Writing Awards competition, according to a recent news release. The competition was sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers and administered locally by Writopia Lab. Of the winners, seven students were from Kingstowne area schools including Mark Twain Middle School, Lee High School and Hayfield High School. Kingstowne area winners: Of the FCPS winning entries, 13 received Gold Key awards, 39 received Silver Key Awards, and 61 received Honorable Mentions for outstanding work in dramatic scripts, flash fiction, humor, journalism, personal essays-memoirs, persuasive writing, poetry, short stories, …

C-SPAN Campaign Bus to Visit Hayfield

C-SPAN will make a presentation Tuesday morning at Hayfield Secondary School.

C-SPAN will present its mobile interactive presentation on the political process and the elections at Hayfield Secondary School from 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Tuesday as part of its Campaign 2012 Bus stops. Hayfield seniors taking U.S. government will be allowed on the bus for an up-close look at how the cable network operates and will learn about C-SPAN's public affairs event coverage and view Web offerings. Coaches' Corner: Hayfield v. Herndon

The Hayfield Hawks will go head-to-head with the Herndon Hornets Friday night.

The Hayfield varsity boys' basketball team will play against the Herndon Hornets at 7:30 p.m. at Herndon High School. The Hawks started practicing Wednesday specifically in preparation for Friday's game. Hawks Head Coach Carlos Poindexter said the team is preparing for Herndon's strong point guards, Trevon Wright and William Ferguson. Poindexter also said the team is anxious to see how they will handle the Hornets on defense. "We're looking forward to how we are going to handle their press because they're a pressure team that likes to trap," Poindexter said.
