High school students can check out higher learning choices in October at Fair Oaks Mall and Hayfield Secondary School.
Representatives from about 400 colleges and universities will be on hand Oct. 21 at Fairfax County Public Schools' (FCPS) annual College Fair. The 2012 College Fair will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Fair Oaks Mall. Students who register for the fair receive a pass admissions representatives can electronically scan to access their information, instead of asking students to fill out information cards for each college booth they visit. FCPS will also host the 2012 College Night at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at Hayfield Secondary School. College Night is led by FCPS staff members and experts outside the system, who conduct a series of workshops on college-related topics, including SAT and ACT tests, career planning, financial aid, college …

The Hayfield Hawks fell to the James Madison Warhawks (2-1) 24-17 on Friday. The Hawks are 2-1, and the loss can be attributed to turnovers and a blocked punt in the fourth quarter, which resulted in a Madison Touchdown. "Nothing teaches you better than pain. It's the best teacher in the world," said Hayfield coach Roy Hill to his team after the game. "Hey, this is a man's sport and you've got to pick yourselves back up. Do you think Yorktown is going to feel sorry for us next week? I don't think so." The Hawks face Yorktown at home on Friday, Sept. 21. Gametime is 7:30 p.m.

Seven hundred new Americans will be honored at Hayfield Secondary on Tuesday.
At 11 a.m. today, Rep. Gerry Connolly will speak to 700 new American citizens at a naturalization ceremony at Hayfield Secondary School hosted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (CIS). Rep. Connolly will recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the new Americans and then speak about the importance of being an American. As a frequent participant of naturalization ceremonies, he thinks every American should attend a ceremony. “It is a wonderful ceremony that reinforces one’s patriotism,” said Connolly in a news release about the ceremony.

Hayfield Secondary School's baseball team ended last season the way it began—on fire. The Hawks started the year with a seven-game win streak, scoring 10 or more runs in four of the team’s first seven games. Hayfield cruised through its regular season schedule and won the school’s second-ever district title as the Hawks defeated Yorktown 17-16 in the National District championship. This season, Hayfield (8-5) currently sits at 7-2 in National District play and is determined to prove that last year’s success was hardly a fluke. “While we did win districts last season, we only had two guys returning that contributed and played on that team,” said first-year head coach Michael Shore, who has been with the program for four years, told Patch …

First lady Michelle Obama will appear at Hayfield Secondary today, along with the cast of the Nickelodeon show iCarly, in an event for military families. Obama and the actors will answer questions and screen a new episode of the show, which follows a teenage girl and the web show she produces. In the episode, "iMeet the First Lady," main character Carly (played by Miranda Cosgrove) is supported by her friends during her father's deployment in the military. Later in the episode, the first lady visits to thank Carly and her friends, USA Today reports.

The Edison Eagles beat the Hayfield Hawks 53-40 in girls varsity basketball action on Monday night in front of a spirited crowd that wasn’t deterred by the season’s first snowfall. The win upped the Eagles record to 8-4 on the season and gave them their third consecutive “Bird Bowl” victory over the rival Hawks, who fell to 3-9 on the season. The Eagles raced out to an early advantage but the Hawks trimmed the lead to 24-23 at the half.
