A Look at Route 1 After Hurricane Sandy

The Route 1 corridor experienced some traffic light outages, business closures during Hurricane Sandy.

The Route 1 corridor experienced a few broken tree limbs and some traffic light outages after heavy winds and rains from Hurricane Sandy. The Huntington community didn't experience flooding and Fairfax County has lifted the flood warning from Huntington as of Tuesday morning. However, the Belle View and New Alexandria areas are still being monitored for possible flooding Tuesday afternoon or evening. Residents will be called and public safety will go door-to-door if flooding is imminent. WMATA: Metro to Reopen at 2 p.m. Tuesday

Limited rail, bus service returns Tuesday afternoon; full service expected by Wednesday.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced Tuesday morning it would restore rail and bus service at 2 p.m., with trains and buses operating on a Sunday schedule. WMATA said normal weekday service — including rush hour service — would be restored in time for Wednesday opening. Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess were suspended for all of Monday and Tuesday morning as the system braced for the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Tuesday Storm Update: Winds, Rain Expected to Diminish

Temperatures could feel as cold as 40 degrees. More than 180,000 without power Tuesday morning.

Update - 2:53 p.m. Tuesday  Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said Tuesday afternoon that the commonwealth was "spared a significant event" with Hurricane Sandy. The brunt of the damage was north of Virginia along the New Jersey coast. Power outages from Sandy will not last nearly as long as they did during this past summer's derecho. “It is our intention to have all our customers restored to service by Thursday night,” said Rodney Blevins, vice president of distribution operations for Dominion. Northern Virginia sustained the most damage, Blevins said. Mail-in Ballot Deadline Extended

Hurricane Sandy has delayed postal mail and closed the Office of Elections.

The Fairfax County Office of Elections will be closed Tuesday, so the mail-in deadline has been extended because of Hurricane Sandy. Any applications received Wednesday, Oct. 31 — or when the office reopens — will be considered received on time due to emergency situations based on Virginia Code when an officials office is closed, according to the Fairfax County Emergency Information Blog. No mail was delivered Monday, and mail will not be delivered Tuesday, Oct. 30. The statutory deadline for mail-in was originally Tuesday, Oct. 30; this deadline still applies for applications sent by fax to 703-324-3725 or e-mail to absenteeballot@fairfaxcounty.gov.  Absentee voting has been canceled for Tuesday, Oct. 30.

County Offices Closed Tuesday due to Hurricane Sandy

Fairfax County Government Offices, community centers and SACCs will be closed Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Fairfax County Government Offices will be closed Tuesday, Oct. 30 and employees are granted emergency administrative leave. Emergency service personnel will report as scheduled, according to Fairfax County Government. Fairfax County Public Schools and Offices will also be closed Tuesday due to Hurricane Sandy. Other business closings and county cancellations include: The Fairfax County Emergency Information Hotline has been activated and is available for residents to call for information about the storm. The number is 571-350-1300, TTY 711.  For an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Monday Evening Update: Sandy Becomes Post-Tropical Cyclone

The National Hurricane Center increased its predictions for rain and top wind speeds with Hurricane Sandy in DC and Northern Virginia.

Sandy is expected to bring near-hurricane force winds and flood-producing rainfall through much of Tuesday. NOAA added that the most severe portion of the storm will affect the DC metro region from 6 p.m. Monday through dawn on Tuesday. "Residents and businesses along the Potomac River...should prepare for a flood not seen since the floods of 1996," NOAA said in an advisory. Metro Will Not Reopen Tuesday Morning

Metro officials will make a decision on service restoration after they assess damage.

The following is the latest news release from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority: Due to extreme weather conditions from Hurricane Sandy that are expected to impact the entire Metro service area through the overnight hours, Metro has announced the following for Tuesday, Oct. 30:    •  Metrorail and Metrobus service will not resume service Tuesday morning.  An announcement on when service may be restored will be made after Metro is able to assess damage and weather conditions in the morning. Metro personnel will need to perform a comprehensive damage assessment, including inspections of track, bridges, aerial structures, stations and facilities. Lee District RECenter Open as Shelter for Residents

Fairfax County will open shelters as needed during Hurricane Sandy to help assist residents.

Residents who find themselves without power or other accomodations during Hurricane Sandy are in luck. Fairfax County has opened a shelter at the Lee District RECenter located at 6601 Telegraph Road, Alexandria, according to the Fairfax County emergency blog. The blog post states that residents are allowed to bring the following items to the shelter: Blankets and cots will be given to those who come to the shelter. In addition, Fairfax County Animal Control will have a mobile van to help those residents with pets have a place to keep their animals safe. Only cats and dogs will be allowed in the RECenter. Fairfax County Launches New Hurricane Reporting Tool

Residents can notify county of downed trees and more online.

Fairfax County residents can now report the effects of Hurricane Sandy – including downed trees, nonfunctioning traffic lights and more – from their computers. The county has launched its new crowd-source reporting map so that residents can let officials know what they see in their communities when they see it. Fairfax County’s emergency information blog stresses that the tool is not a replacement for 911, and that residents should still call 911 if they find themselves in an emergency.
