Three Killed in Thursday Accident on I-495 Ramp

Pickup truck rear ends tractor trailer at Springfield Interchange.

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash Thursday night on the Springfield Interchange. Three people died in the accident, which occurred around 7 p.m. Thursday on the I-495 Beltway flyover ramp that leads to I-95 South.  "A tractor-trailer in the travel lane was stopped in traffic when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck. All three occupants of the pickup truck died at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash," Virginia State Police said in a release Thursday night. The cause of the crash is still being determined. As of 8:30 p.m., the flyover ramp remained closed and traffic is being diverted.

Truck Dumps Load on Flyover Ramp

A Woodbridge man has been charged with reckless driving.

A tractor-trailer overturned on the westbound I-495 to I-95 HOV south flyover ramp Tuesday at 2:20 p.m. No injuries were reported in that crash. Police charged a Woodbridge man after they say his truck hit a cement wall and debris spilled all over Interstate 495.  Hector Y. Lopez-Navarro, 41, of Woodbridge, is charged with reckless driving. There were two accidents involving Woodbridge residents on I-495 in the space of five minutes.   Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash Tuesday at 2:25 p.m. on the westbound I-495 ramp, leading to the southbound I-95 HOV lanes, VSP spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.
