Two seats among those Republicans hope to nab in Tuesday's election
As Election Day nears, Virginia Republicans are keeping a close eye on several tight races across the state, hoping to wrest control of the state Senate away from the Democrats. George Mason University Professor Mark Rozell told Reuters that if Republicans take the state Senate, it could spell trouble next year for President Obama, who won the state in 2008. Northern Virginia has seen visits in recent weeks from Michelle Obama, second lady Jill Biden, former President Bill Clinton and GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Beth El Hebrew Congregation hosted a candidates' brunch.
Candidates in three state senate races fielded questions from constituents at a candidates’ brunch at Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria on Sunday. The brunch was hosted by the Brotherhood of Beth El Congregation. 36th District candidates Jeff Frederick and Sen. Toddy Puller, 39th District candidates Miller Baker and Sen. George Barker, and 31st District candidate Barbara Favola. Favola’s opponent, Caren Merrick, was not present. The National Federation of Independent Businesses have announced its endorsement of Senate candidate Jeff Frederick.
The National Federation for Independent Businesses (NFIB) has announced its endorsement of Senate candidate Jeff Frederick. The NFIB, along with Virginia's Save America's Free Enterprise (SAFE) Trust, have endorsed Frederick becuase he is supportive of small businesses. The organization has 6,000 members in Virginia. The SAFE Trust consists of NFIB members. Loses to Jeff Frederick in Republican State Senate primary
Tito "The Builder" Munoz will be back, he pledged to supporters after conceding the Republican Primary for Virginia's 36th State Senate District. Jeffrey M. Frederick defeated Munoz 69.07% to 30.92%, in a low turnout election. An expected five percent of the electorate voted today, which was highlighted by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. In a sweeping victory, Jeff Frederick won the Republican primary for the 36th Senate seat Tuesday night, despite intermittent earthquakes throughout the day. Frederick announced to a crowd of supporters in Dumfries that he received the call that he won the primary Tuesday night. Frederick held the lead early when precincts began reporting votes after polls closed at 7 p.m. In Prince William County, Frederick gained 76.80 percent, or 2,626 votes, of the unofficial tally, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections website. Challenger Tito Muñoz brought in 793 votes from the county, or 23.19 percent of the vote. Primary election voting will soon be underway in the state of Virginia, including several competitive races in the Northern Virginia area. As the clock ticks closer to Tuesday, some primary candidates are reporting, by state law, any campaign donations or loans of $1,000 or more to the State Board of Elections. After receiving a donation or loan, candidates must report the amounts and donors by 5 p.m. the next day. The Virginia Public Access Project tracks donations and plans to update the list daily through Tuesday, the day of the primary. Former Congressional candidate Keith Fimian announced his endorsement of state senate candidate Jeff Frederick today. Fimian ran against Congressman Gerry Connolly for the 11th Congressional District seat last year. Fimian lost to Connolly by a narrow margin, but he won the Prince William County portion of the vote. Two Republican candidates for the 36th Senate sounded off in a forum Tuesday. Jeff Frederick and Tito Muñoz are on the ticket for a heavily democratic 36th Senate district, held by current Senator Toddy Puller (D) since 1999. The new 36th district contains portions of Fairfax County and a large section of eastern Prince William County as well as a small part of Stafford County.
