Twain Middle School to Start Running Program

School counselor Tawney Desjardins plans to implement a running program in support of Sandy Hook victims with the help of faculty and students.

Since the Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown, Conn., in December, multiple runners nationwide have dedicated their participation in different marathons to the 26 lives lost in the small town tragedy. After Danielle Emhof — an eighth grader at Mark Twain Middle School — was inspired by two of her teachers to run in the National Marathon in March in honor of the 26 lives lost in the Sandy Hook shooting, school counselor Tawny Desjardins is now developing and planning a running program for Twain Middle School students that will start next school year. "Our goal is to work and do some research and get it started next year," Desjardins said. "We want to end the school year next year with a 5K and help support 26 for 26." Desjardins grew up near …

Fire and Rescue Close Case on Monday's Brush Fire

Fairfax County firefighters put out a brush fire Monday afternoon behind Mark Twain Middle School and Clermont Elementary School.

The case on Monday's brush fire behind Mark Twain Middle School and Clermont Elementary School is closed, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Public Information Office. The start of the fire is still unknown. About 45 personnel from Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria fire departments responded to a 911 report of a brush fire behind the schools in the Rose Hill area. The call was made around 3:45 p.m. and firefighters arrived on the scene about three minutes later, PIO said Tuesday. Firefighters were able to get the fire out in about 10 minutes. Firefighters Rush to Contain Brush Fire Near Schools in Rose Hill Area

About 45 firefighters are on the scene in the Rose Hill area; some streets are blocked off.

Update (5:45 p.m. Monday): Firefighters on the scene on Kerrybrooke Drive said the fire department has managed to put out the fire. Firefighters are still on the scene to ensure the fire doesn't rekindle, and surrounding streets are currently still blocked off. PHOTOS: Twain Middle School Students Run Marathon for Sandy Hook Victims

Mark Twain Middle School student Danielle Emhof organized and planned for a relay team of students to run in the National Marathon last Saturday.

Danielle Emhof — an eighth grade student at Mark Twain Middle School — came up with the idea to run 1 mile in honor of each victim from the December school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., during this year's National Marathon in D.C. Following Danielle's plan for 13 students to run the first part of the race and for 13 more students to finish the race, Danielle and her team completed the marathon and ran 1 mile for each of the 26 victim's of December's tragic shooting. PHOTOS: Students, Parents Celebrate Twain Night

Mark Twain Middle School held its 'Twain NIght' for current and prospective students and parents Thursday evening.

Mark Twain Middle School hosted 'Twain Night' 6-8 p.m. Thursday. The event was planned to showcase and celebrate the academics and various activities at the school. During the event, participants enjoyed food, games, a canned food drive, face painting, a cake walk, miniature golf and poetry slams. Twain Middle Schooler to Run in National Marathon in Honor of Sandy Hook Victims

Eighth grader Danielle Emhof, was inspired by her teachers to run 1 mile for each victim of the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

In early January, Danielle Emhof — an eighth grader at Mark Twain Middle School — was inspired by two of her teachers, Lauren Arthur and Eric Henderson, who are scheduled to run in the National Marathon in D.C. Saturday morning. Emhof's mother, Cathy said Danielle came up with the idea to run 1 mile in honor of each victim from the December school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. "She emailed the race director of the National Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and they loved the idea," Cathy said in a recent email. "The race director and his operations team came up with a plan to help her execute her idea." VIDEO: Mark Twain Middle School Bands Concert Draws Large Crowd

The Beginning, Concert and Symphonic bands performed a variety of selections during their winter concert.

Approximately 140 students in the Beginning, Concert and Symphonic bands at Mark Twain Middle School performed a variety of selections in front of a full audience Wednesday night. The students performed with Brian Balmages whose music has been performed by members of leading orchestras such as the St. Louis Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra and the National Symphony.

Twain Middle School Bands to Have Winter Concert

The Beginning, Concert and Symphonic Bands will perform a variety of holiday selections, Wednesday night.

The Mark Twain Middle School bands will present their winter concert at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the school cafeteria. Approximately 140 students in the Beginning, Concert and Symphonic bands will perform a variety of selections, including holiday tunes like “Jingle Bells” and “Hanukkah is Here” and the march “Falcons in Flight.” The bands will also perform the Virginia premiere of “A House Divided,” based on President Abraham Lincoln’s 1858 “House Divided” speech, created by composer Brian Balmages. Balmages will participate as a guest conductor during the event. Boston Brass tuba player Andrew Hitz will also complement the students' performance. Which Middle School Sends the Most Students to TJHSST?

Twain Middle School is among the schools with the highest number of students accepted to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.

Fairfax County's Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is tough to get into. Ranked second in the nation this week by U.S. News, the school attracted 3,243 applicants this year for the 480 slots in its freshman class. Mark Twain Middle School is among the schools in Fairfax County that send the most students to the highly-selective school. Twain Middle Technology Teacher Dies Saturday

Lori Riddick passed away on Jan. 14 due to complications from surgery.

A technology teacher at Mark Twain Middle School died on Saturday, Jan. 14 due to complications from a surgery. School Principal Aimee Holleb informed the Mark Twain community in an email Sunday, Jan. 15, through the Fairfax County Public Schools' Keep in Touch (KIT) system.  Dear Mark Twain MS Community, Our community mourns the loss of Technology Teacher Lori Riddick. She passed away yesterday due to complications from a surgery. Mrs. Riddick worked with 7th graders, 8th graders and many former Twain students. She taught Computer Solutions, Digital Input Technology, and Advanced Computer Solutions.
