Dixie Pig Owner Adelaide 'Addie' Arthur Dies At 73

Del. Scott Surovell paid tribute to Addie in his 'The Dixie Pig' blog named after a favorite restaurant of his grandmother's.

Hayfield Farms resident and entrepreneur Adelaide 'Addie' Arthur died on Thursday, March 22, 2012. She was 73. Addie's family was the owner and operator of many businesses, opening the Dixie Pig BBQ restaurants, according to the Legacy obituary in The Washington Post. "People from all across the country have raved about the Dixie Pig, including weatherman Willard Scott," the Legacy obituary reads. "The restaurant was also featured on an episode of CSI." According to The Washington Post, the first Dixie Pig opened in 1924 on Powhatan Street in Alexandria. Now it's Vaso's Kitchen, but the old Dixie Pig signage still sits atop the restaurant. The second Dixie Pig location opened on Route 1 in 1946. Although the location at Beacon Hill Road …

VDOT: Minimal Secondary Road Maintenance Over Next Two Years

Things could get a little bumpy.

Although this winter hasn't been nearly as hard on area roadways as winters past, many residents are dodging potholes on secondary roads in their neighborhoods. Clearly, Northern Virginia's secondary roadways need ongoing maintenance, but Virginia Department of Transportation maintenance funds have run dry. Local lawmakers are frustrated over the problem, and some are wrestling with the ramifications of taking the responsibility from the state.  "Some secondary roads in [Fairfax] County haven't gotten attention in 15 years, and we have a huge system of roadways," said Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland (D). "When are those people in Richmond going to adequately fund transportation funding in Northern Virginia before it's …

Evidently screaming and shouting by telephone, email and letter do not work. Maybe we should "occupy" something or somewhere until we become a thorough going nuisance - welllllllllllll, maybe (grin). The state would do as our parents did when we went through some performance or another to get attention. - ignored completely, NOTHING They don't have to listen to us. Find out what it costs in terms…   more ›

Northern Virginia Politicians Tapped For Obama Campaign's 'Virginia Truth Team'

Del. Scott Surovell, Sen. Adam Ebbin join various other Virginia Democrats to stump for President across 2012 battleground state

Mount Vernon Democrats Del. Scott Surovell and Sen. Adam Ebbin were appointed to the Obama reelecton campaign's 'Virginia Truth Team' on Monday and will join Rep. Jim Moran, Rep. Gerry Connolly, and a host of other Democrats to aid in spreading Obama's campaign message and responding to attacks from his opponents. After narrowly carrying Virginia in 2008, the Obama campaign expects a tough race this year, especially after Republicans took control of the General Assembly last year. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is also often mentioned as a potential running mate for Mitt Romney.  "President Obama’s record should speak for itself," Surovell said in a press release. "[B]etween the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, preventing a …

Simply put, enough lies went unchallenged over the past few years that an a "Tea Party" backlash resulted in major losses in electoral politics in VA and other states. We see today a Republican dominated VA legislature and governor elected under the banner of jobs and economy. Their actions thus far show their true motivation being intrusions into the private lives of citizens with regards to …   more ›

State Sens. Puller and Ebbin, Del. Surovell Hold Mount Vernon Town Hall

Transportation is popular discussion topic

Transportation and transit issues took center stage Saturday morning at a Mount Vernon town hall hosted by state lawmakers from Northern Virginia. State Sens. Toddy Puller (36th District) and Adam Ebbin (30th District), as well as Del. Scott Surovell (44th District), all Democrats, spoke before constituents during a two-hour event at the Mount Vernon Government Center. Puller said Route 1 north of Highway 235 will be widened, but the timetable is up in the air. “You will see the funding for that, I do believe, but I don’t know whether it will be in my lifetime,” she said. Puller noted that many Fort Belvoir employees are driving to the base from the south, also causing traffic back-ups toward Prince William County.  Surovell noted that …

General Assembly 2012: Area Lawmakers Head to Richmond for 60-Day Legislative Session

Proposals by area legislators include hike in gas tax, campaign sign clutter, giving localities right to ban smoking in parks.

Northern Virginia lawmakers will make their case for hiking gas taxes, banning smoking in parks, cutting the clutter of campaign signs and dozens of other proposals beginning at 12 Noon Wednesday, the official start of the 2012 legislative session of the General Assembly in Richmond. The three proposals are just a sampling of what lawmakers will consider during the 60-day session in the state capital.  Lawmakers' first order of business may be to determine who is in charge in the Senate. Evenly divided by party, it's uncertain whether Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling can step in and serve as a tie-breaker on some votes. At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Gov. Bob McDonnell will deliver his State of the Commonwealth address. A budget shortfall …

We have a transportation funding shortfall. Politicians for decades have not made provisions for mitigating the situation. So I should NOW give them MORE money with which to do nothing? I think not. If you can't solve it with brainpower, you can't solve it with dollars.   more ›

Scott Surovell's Roots Run Deep in 44th

Incumbent Democrat’s to-do list includes fixing Route 1, promoting green initiatives, and adding more preschools.

Scott Surovell became the delegate to Virginia’s 44th District almost by accident two years ago, when then-incumbent Democrat Kristen Amundson, in office since 1999, changed her mind about running after winning her primary. The House Minority Leader contacted Surovell. “He said he needed me to run,” said Surovell, a lawyer who quickly decided he could translate his legal know-how and understanding of the area he grew up in into serving in the General Assembly. He put a campaign into gear. He went on to win the seat less than five months later with 53.4 percent of the vote in a three-person race. He didn’t stop running when he hit Richmond for his first term, introducing bills and as a minority freshman, even seeing some pass, he said. Some…

Also, factor in the crime issue. Without having access to county's crime stats, it is safe to say that crime is on the upswing; especially armed robberies of individuals and merchants. We no longer frequent Route 1 establishments during the evening hours. Finally, traffic enforcement of jaywalkers is necessary.   more ›

N. Va. Incumbents Out-Raising Challengers in Key Assembly Races

Albo, Barker, Puller, Surovell outpace opponents in latest reporting period, Aug. 11-31 and have more cash-on-hand.

Incumbents in several closely watched Virginia Assembly races in Fairfax County out-raised their challengers last month, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, which tracks campaign spending. Here's a look at fund-raising for a few select races, plus the wide-open state's 30th District Senate race, with the general election just seven weeks away. The amounts listed under each subheading are funds raised by the campaigns from Aug. 11-31, from reports submitted by Sept. 16 by the campaigns. House of Delegates District 42 Race Republican Del. Dave Albo, the incumbent in the 42nd District, moved even further ahead of Democratic contender Jack Dobbyn in the money race to hang onto his seat, according to VPAP. From Aug. 11-31, Albo …

Hi m.tracy: This article was meant to be a "snapshot in time" of fund-raising efforts for the local candidates, just to give readers a sense of where each candidate was, financially, at the point we wrote this. The numbers for this article came from VPAP.org—you're right that it's a really good resource. In the coming weeks, we'll be doing more on campaign finances, especially since more than one…   more ›
