Q&A with Taylor Holland, New Chief of Staff for Supervisor Jeff McKay

Holland worked for the Washington Examiner before taking his new position with McKay's office.

Although he's no longer the person wielding the voice recorder or the pen and notepad, Taylor Holland — the new chief of staff for Supervisor Jeff McKay — is still a journalist at heart. Born in Florida, Holland said his family moved to Atlanta where he spent his high school years. He attended University of Alabama where he earned a degree in journalism. Before covering Northern Virginia news for the Washington Examiner, Holland previously reported for the Selma Times-Journal and the Tuscaloosa News in Alabama and takes his new position after Mike McClanahan held the position for a little more than a year. Three weeks into his new position, Holland sat down with Patch to discuss his experiences, local projects and what he's looking forward…

Board of Supervisors Approve Matter Concerning Childcare Fee Schedule

The Childcare Assistance and Referral program provides tuition assistance on a sliding fee scale for working families with low to moderate income in the Fairfax County area.

During the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday, the board passed a joint matter concerning the sliding fee scale for the county's Childcare Assistance and Referral program. Supervisors Jeff McKay and Cathy Hudgins and Chairman Sharon Bulova were joined on this matter. The board has agreed to send a letter addressed to Dr. William A. Hazel, secretary of health and human resources, expressing their concerns about the possible changes in the sliding fee scale for Fairfax County. For more than 15 years, Fairfax County has had a waiver from the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) to use a local sliding fee scale, instead of the state fee scale to determine parents' childcare co-payment. The fee scale, specific to the …

Gov. Bob McDonnell Endorses Springfield for New FBI Headquarters

McDonnell recently wrote a letter addressed to the director of the FBI and the acting administrator for the U.S. General Services Administration.

In a recent letter, Gov. Bob McDonnell urged FBI Director Robert S. Mueller and U.S. General Services Administration Acting Administrator Dan M. Tangherlini to carefully consider the GSA Warehouse located in Springfield for the FBI's relocation. McDonnell wrote: We know that as you seek to save over $44 million in lease payments per year, locating the FBI headquarters at the GSA-owned warehouse property will allow the FBI to save the expense of purchasing a considerable parcel of land. Because the GSA owns the  warehouse property, the transaction mechanism that guarantees federal government ownership of  the campus is both clean and easy. Finally, the GSA Warehouse property satisñes Interagency Security Committee guidelines for Level V …

Edison High School to Get New Turf Field

Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay's office confirms the proper funds have been acquired to move forward with the project.

Installing a new artificial turf field at Edison High School is currently going through the engineering phase, according to Linda Waller, director of communications for the Office of Supervisor Jeff McKay. Waller said $450,000 has been transferred from the Liberty View proffer to Fairfax County Public Schools to help fund the turf field, and the project is moving forward. As the project progresses, other proffers will contribute funds to complete the project. Benefits of a turf field include the ability to conduct sports events during inclement weather and decreasing the chances of injuries during matches. Patch will follow this story and update it as it progresses. Follow Kingstowne Patch on Twitter and like us on Facebook!

This is great for our players, but I can't help but wonder about all the goose poop! O.o I do not know much about a turf field so I have this horrible vision of goose poop just sitting on top of the turf with no where to go! Sorry if I ruined anyone's breakfast!   more ›

The Springfield area is one of six potential sites being considered for the new FBI headquarters.

During Tuesday's Board of Supervisor's meeting, the board passed Supervisors Jeff McKay and Cathy Hudgins and Chairman Sharon Bulova's joint matter to review and respond to the Commission of Women's (CFW) recent recommendations on domestic violence and housing in Fairfax County. According to the written matter, CFW has been developing the recommendations on how to increase safe, affordable housing options for domestic violence victims in the county since 2010. In doing so, CFW has heard from a number of organizations including non-profits, faith-based and government groups that help domestic violence with their housing needs. In their research, CFW found there is a definite link between domestic violence and homelessness. CFW also found …

The support that these Board of Supervisors has given to victims of domestic violence (DV) is heartening. It is time that our county starts to fully take onboard the plight of victims and their families. Their needs are unique, and there is no cookie-cutter approach that will work to restore financial and emotional stability. I have spent the last 10 years working with victims and have seen far …   more ›

SPEAK OUT: Should FBI Headquarters be Located in Springfield?

Fairfax County Supervisors are in full support of FBI headquarters relocating in the Springfield area. What do you think?

For months now, local, state and congressional leaders have been discussing six potential sites for a new FBI headquarters. One of the six locations being considered is Fairfax County's preferred location, a federal warehouse near the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station. Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay is in full support of the FBI headquarters locating in Springfield because it would be located right across from the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station and a Virginia Express Rail ride away from Quantico. Recently, McKay urged the WMATA Board Members to avoid taking sides and to be fair when he found out about WMATA offering the 78 acres of land it owns at the Greenbelt station to promote the relocation of the FBI headquarters. Besides …

Of course it is, just as it was smarter to place the Mark Center here rather than building an unnecessary monstrosity with no public transportation! However, those who make the decisions seem to lose logic and only care about what is best for them. So, we will see. I'm curious about the Victory Center on Eisenhower. How come it has been empty so long? It is a prime location. I don't understand …   more ›

Supervisor Jeff McKay Asks Metro to be Fair in Choosing FBI Location

McKay recently wrote a letter to the Board Members of WMATA asking them to avoid taking sides.

After reading in Wednesday's issue of The Washington Post about WMATA offering the 78 acres of land it owns at the Greenbelt station to promote the relocation of the FBI headquarters, Supervisor Jeff McKay said he was surprised and disappointed. McKay wrote a letter to the WMATA Board Members Thursday asking them to avoid taking sides and to be fair. According to McKay's letter, the WMATA planning staff said moving the FBI to the Greenbelt station would encourage reverse commuting. To that explanation, McKay said in his letter: Reverse commuting would be equally, if not better, served at other sites such as Virginia’s Springfield site, adjacent to the Franconia/ Springfield Metro station. That location is Fairfax County’s priority site and…
