TJHSST Student Wins Tony Griffin Partnership Leader Award

Kevin Cao was recently acknowledged by the Fairfax County Office of Public Private Partnerships.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology student Kevin Cao was recently awarded the Tony Griffin Partnership Leader Award for his work with Growth and Inspiration through Volunteering and Education (GIVE) — a non-profit organization he founded with a fellow classmate and another student from Robinson Secondary School. Thomas Jefferson Students Win First Place in Economics Competition

The Governor's Challenge in Economics and Personal Finance took place last week.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology students were awarded 2013 Governor’s Challenge Champions in Economics and Personal Finance last week.  The winning students from Fairfax's Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology were Scott Gibson, Hamil Shah, Catherine Shi, and Robert Wang, who are coached by teacher Haywood Torrence. They won first place in their division. The Governor’s Challenge is meant to enhance economics and financial education for students in grades K-12, according to a press release from the Fairfax County Public School syste. The Fairfax County students went up against more than 2,100 high school students in Virginia competed in preliminary rounds of the competition.  Students are either …

Which Middle Schools Had the Most Students Accepted to TJHSST?

Of the 3,121 students who applied to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, 76 percent of applicants were from Fairfax County.

For the second consecutive year, the majority of students accepted to the incoming freshman class at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST or TJ) will come from middle schools in Herndon and Falls Church. According to data from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), Carson Middle School in Herndon had the most students accepted, a total of 64, for the class of 2017. Longfellow Middle School in Falls Church and Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly each had 55 students accepted. Last year, 76 students were admitted from Carson and 72 from Longfellow. Of 3,212 Who Applied, 480 Students Admitted to Thomas Jefferson Class of 2017

Seventy-six percent of applicants were from Fairfax County.

Students admitted this year to one of the country's most prestigious high schools — Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County — will predominantly be Asian and male, according to statistics released Friday by Fairfax County Public Schools. The school was ranked second in the nation last year by U.S. News & World Report. A total of 480 new students will comprise the class of 2017 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). Thomas Jefferson Applications Now Available

Deadline to sign up for admissions test to science and technology high school is Oct. 19.

Applications for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), the Governor’s regional school for science and technology in Northern Virginia, are now available both online and in paper form, Fairfax County Public Schools announced. Earlier this year, U.S. News named the high school second best in the United States and the best high school in Virginia. The school is highly competitive, drawing an average of 3,300 applications for fewer than 500 open slots every year. Over the summer, the Fairfax County School Board started to discuss what a different admissions process may look like to alleviate concerns about some lack of diversity and some slippage in test scores. Fairfax County's Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is tough to get into. Ranked second in the nation this week by U.S. News, the school attracted 3,243 applicants this year for the 480 slots in its freshman class. Mark Twain Middle School is among the schools in Fairfax County that send the most students to the highly-selective school. FCPS Requesting $252.75 Million in Bond Referendum

Passage would add to the $232.58 million approved by voters in 2009.

Fairfax County voters are faced with a $252.75 million dollar decision.  Included on the Nov. 8 general election ballot is a school bond referendum to fund Fairfax County Public School's 2012-16 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Each year Fairfax County Public Schools develops a five-year CIP to address future facility needs, including renovations of existing facilities and building of new facilities.  According to Denise James, director of Facilities Planning Services for FCPS, unfinished projects from previous CIP’s are carried over into the new one. “The CIP includes a cash flow of expenditures on projections over the next five years, and then anticipates expenditures in the 'out years' – i.e., over the subsequent 6-10 year period, for…

Thomas Jefferson High School Plans for Major Expansion

Renovations to the science and technology school will begin in 2013, officials say.

Fairfax County is planning an $80 million expansion to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology to be completed in 2015. Annandale Patch reports that the school will increase in size by about 45 percent, from 265,400 square feet now to up to 385,000 square feet by the end of the expansion. The renovation will start with the new addition. Students and staff will then move into the addition while construction occurs in other parts of the building. Officials say they expect construction to begin in 2013 and end in the fall of 2015, at the earliest. See Annandale Patch for the full story.

My son went through the process and didn't get in. All-in-all I thought it was fair and a worthwhile endeavor. It really helps point out to your child the things you have to do for a college application. It is highly competitive. My son usually scores in the 99th percentile on standard tests. He scored about 75th percentile out of the 3500+ that took the TJ test (by my math, that's like 800+ kids…   more ›
