Stone Bridge Powers Past Hayfield

Hawks drop Northern Region volleyball championship in decisive fashion

Hayfield's impressive season is not over, but the Hawks hit a speed bump in their straight-set loss to Stone Bridge in the Northern Region championship match on Saturday. The Hawks will travel to Virginia Beach to take on Kellam in their VHSL AAA state quarterfinal match on Tuesday. Hayfield scored the first point of the match, but Stone Bridge fired right back. The teams kept close, but after a Hayfield net fault, the Bulldogs surged ahead. Hayfield's Shannen Cochraham scored four straight spikes, but it wasn't enough. "We played our best and we played with heart," Cochraham said. The Hawks' defense became emotional and their plays got sloppy and disorganized. Hayfield Volleyball Wins National District Title For Second Straight Year

Hawks defeat Yorktown Patriots to successfully defend district crown

Hayfield won its second-straight National District championship Thursday, cruising to a 3-1 win over the Yorktown Patriots. In the first set, the Hawks controlled the court and forced Yorktown to make multiple errors. Hayfield won with ease, 25-16, and set the tone for the rest of the match. "The girls worked really hard for this all year," Hayfield coach Jeff Berggren Said. In the second set, Hayfield mercilessly attacked with powerhouse serves, unblockable spikes and trick settting. At 21-9, Yorktown rallied and scored 5 straight points, but inevitable fell to Hayfield, 25-14.
